1991 Alfa Romeo 164 Base Sedan 4-Door Description
Running, driving 1991 Alfa 164 5spd with 124K.I bought this last August and drove it a fair bit overthe summer and winter. As much as I like the car and have putconsiderably effort into it I think I'd like to pair down the fleetand concentrate on other hobbies right now.Needs struts, bushings etc and motor mounts. Tie rods and ball joints and such are safe to drive on, but it's not much fun otherwise.Likely due a valve adjustment as I have no paperwork stating when it was last done.Clear coat failing in a few spots, few dings, leather seats are very hard.Since I've owned it I have:Changed/flushed all the fluids including brake and transRemoved the interior and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned all of it.Replaced the failing headliner.Replaced the HVAC stepper motors using newer BMW gears and employed the "resistor mod".Replaced every light bulb in the car, including in the HVAC control unit.Replaced the fuel pump submersible hose and pump support unit and check valve(have receipt for recent pump replacement)Replaced the drive belts and idler roller.Full tune up including plugs, wires, cap, rotor, 02 sensor, air and fuel filters, injector o-rings, distributor o-rings and various other aged seals and such. Note all quality NGK/Bosch etc parts.Repaired a number of isolated wiring faults, no evidence of chronic insulation failure though the injector harness is still a little "meh" but it's intact and working.Replaced the air/oil separator with a NOS unit and it's hoses and most other vacuum hoses with silicone(they sell a kit for this car).Replaced the exhaust rubber hangers when it was removed to remove the 02 sensor(which was the most stuck thing I've ever seen in my life).Note the cat was empty when I got it, and I'm not sure if it has a stock B exhaust or something else, it's in good shape and sounds cool, note the Ansa tipsand possibly Ansa or S muffler?.Replaced the underhood fuel lines both from the feed/return and on the fuel rail itself.Replaced all fuses.Replaced the fuel pump, DME and I believe the cooling fan relays.Replaced engine oil pressure sensor for gauge.Replaced temperature sender for gauge.Replaced oil pressure sensor for warning light.Replace cabin air filter.Replaced all the wear items on the shifter linkage including a new alloy joint link, all of it.Replaced the shifter boot with a nice leather stock replica.Replaced the fuel filler neck with a good used later post-recall version.Replaced the air inlet accordian boot with a good used piece.Replaced several missing pieces of interior and exterior trim.Replaced rear deck speakers with Cerwin-Vega, front doors with Kicker.Untold hours of disassembly, cleaning, repairing, adjusting and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.Receipts are available for all of this and then some.I also have a number of parts collected up, radiator, most coolant hoses, thermostat, DME coolant temp sensor, assorted other odds and ends.Full three book service manual is included, along with the factory owners manual set and a goodly number of service records from original
warranty repairs on up.
Overall the car has been reliable and drama free, especially for what I was led to believe Alfa ownership would be like.
No fire extinguishers have been required. The car does not even drip fluids. It weeps some, but they never make it to the ground.
No rust to speak of, a spot near the brake fluid reservoir but that is self explanatory and nothing but surface. This is a 164B that looks to have had Speedline wheels and an S rear spoiler and side skirts added early in life. The factory fog lights are present, but some previous owner has crafted sheet metal covers and it appears glued themover the lenses which I assume are cracked, I haven't tried to remove them. The rear fog lights work, power to the frontsis good.
I'll link to a video of cold start after sitting a week and warm start from this afternoon, it starts easily in any case,
the Alfa guys online tell me my temps and pressures are good though personally I think it takes longer to warm up
than it should. Never overheated or given any hint of it, never a check engine light, never stalled, never done anything
other than run just as it does. Idle is a little rough but I can't say if that is because the motor mounts are shot and it's just
normal Alfa-ness or if it's truly rougher than normal. It's not severe, just not a sewing machine at all. It's smooth at RPM
and quick to rev, seems to have good power. I sometimes think it's power delivery isn't as linear as it should be but I have
experienced this before in European cars that used the flapper style air flow meter. I do know vigorous driving, of which it
has not had much, makes it run better. The proverbial Italian tune-up perhaps. I've not had to top off any oil or coolant.
I firmly believe the motor is solid, it's noisy the way an older european motor tends to be, but it's not smoking or knocking or otherwisescreaming for attention. Per the service records, I believe it's timing belt tensioner was swapped to the thermo-mechanicaltype at it's first timing belt change which I believe was at 52K, I also believe the water pump has been replaced but I do not see
a record of it. I recorded the MPG for two tanks a while back and it was 24mpg with about 3/4 highway driving.
Trans shifts well and drama free after all the new bushings and fluid and such. Not much to say on that front.
Brakes are solid and do not pull or make noise, beyond flushing/bleeding with ATE DOT4 I have done nothing to
them other than glance at the pads to be sure there was enough meat left for awhile.
The front strut bearings, which are mounted under the coil spring on a 164, make noise in parking lots and such from time to time.
The steering is heavy but power assist is working and it's not loosing fluid, I think the suspension in general is just tired and in need
of refresh. The alignment is so-so but it isn't pulling like crazy.
The AC is still R12 per the previous owner that charged it up, it still cools. I replaced the stepper motors as noted and they work, as do
all the controls and functions. The blower is noisy, not the motor itself just the sound of airflow at higher speeds. I've been told they always were overly loud
but I've never heard another so I can't say. All works though, heat and AC, defrost, inside and outside temp display, etc.
Pass rear window regulator is bad and pass front I suspect is going.
Power seats work in all functions, I've pulled and cleaned every switch for seats and windows and lubed the seat mechanism while they were out.
Leather is hard but they are holding up and comfortable to me.
All gauges work, tach is noisy now and again but the needle moves correctly. Odometer works and I believe mileage is correct, trip meter
does not work(bad gear). I had the cluster apart and cleaned it when I replaced the bulbs.
Original radio works well, note the rubber ducky antenna.Cruise works.Tires are pretty good and I've noted no balance issues.
Original spare, jack and tool kit are present, I believe 1 open ended wrench is MIA from the kit.
I polished the tail lamps and center panel and siliconed the taillamps in to discourage leaks. One headlamp is newer than the other, both bulbs are new (allll the bulbs are new, in and out) and they work well enough).
I have a carfax available I can scan and send, it's clean and I believe I am the 3rd or 4th owner, previous owner did not have it long at all, and Isuspect the guy before him did not drive it much at all. The car was absolutely filthy when I got it, now it is not. No loose change and dried upfrench fries under the seats on this one.
I believe if you have a sense of humor you could drive this car home a reasonable distance(it rides rough), but as with anyold car no warranty is expressed or implied. I'm happy to help arrange transport but any costs for such are the responsibility of the buyer. Also, users with low or no feedback need to contact me first, I've been on ebay a long time and am a European automotive professional(not a dealer)that believes in honesty and integrity and more importantly I love old cars.
