B7 Bomber: When the Wealthy Go Stealthy
The all-new 2014 BMW Alpina B7, rolling on exclusive 20-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels and wearing a bold body kit - brand-new front fascia, rear spoiler, and rear lower
valance that help reduce front lift 75percent and rear lift 75percent.Up from 35 and 25% on the 2013 -- looks stealthier than any F01 7 Series model to date. If Hollywood
made "Ronin 2," the B7 RWD would be De Niro's ride of choice. Not only does the Alpina look strong, mean, and sleek, as if it could pounce on an apex in the blink
of an eye, but it coddles up to five crewmembers in complete comfort and, with standard rear drive and an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph(xDrive) and
198 for RWD models! it makes for one masterful escape vehicle. When purchasing a B7, though, don't expect to escape the dealership without plopping down at least
$130,000 to $150,000. In fact, with only around 150 destined for the U.S. per year (BMW will build roughly 900 annually at its Dingolfing factory), the Alpina B7,
The priciest V-8-powered 7 in BMW's lineup, will no doubt command premiums well above its list price. Worth it? But of course.
At the 7 Series' Dinfolfing digs, workers on BMW's "bespoke line" assemble the B7's twin-turbo V-8, which is based on the 750's 440 horsepower, 475-pound-foot
N63 unit and then modified with specialized 46mm Honeywell turbochargers,Forged Mahle pistons,Forged Crank and a reinforced cylinder head, and NGK spark plugs
. Exhaling through an Alpina Stainless Steel low-back-pressure exhaust, the B7's mill is rated at 545 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 536 pound-feet of torque at 3000 rpm.
Fuel economy, at 19 mpg combined for the rear-drive B7, has not suffered, equaling that of a 750i. After driving this beast we believe BMW is being a little low on the numbers.
--------------
To keep all the Alpina's ponies calm and collected in the corral, the B7 utilizes an extensively revamped cooling system that includes an additional oil cooler and coolant radiator,
a low-temp intercooler, an external transmission cooler, and a radiator and 1000-watt radiator fan borrowed from the V-12-powered 760Li. Whether its customers plan to
use the B7 for stoplight drag racing, hot-lapping at a racetrack, or just cruising the Vegas strip in the summer, Alpina aimed to ensure its luxury sedan never overheated.
The B7 utilizes a ZF 8HP542 TUe Eight speed automatic transmission, shared with the 750, but with numerous upgrades to the driveline, notably reinforced driveshaft and
half-shafts from the 760Li and a stiffer differential shell made of iron. Because around 30 percent of Alpina's 200 or so employees are engineers, the B7 also boasts proprietary
software for the engine management system, eight speed automatic, and electronic stability control.
Speaking of ESC, Alpina tuned the B7's to a higher threshold of intervention. Ditto for the traction control system. Not content just toying with the electronics,
Alpina tweaked the hardware as well. The B7 sports stiffer springs as well as brakes borrowed from the armored (and very heavy) 760Li Protection. Rolling stock, too, has
been upgraded. Alpina's 21-inch Classic wheels -- 22 pounds front, 23 pounds rear -- are incredibly light for a cast rim of that diameter and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport
PS2 tires, size 245/35 front, 285/30 rear. (non x Drive)Alpina claims the wheel/tire assembly is lighter than a 750's optional 20-inch wheel fitted with a run-flat tire.
The Alpina philosophy is to produce vehicles that deliver high torque at low rpm, with an overall driving experience that is both quiet and comfortable, even when the
landscape is blurring out of focus. Alpina's targets for the B7, naturally, were the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and the Jaguar XJ Supersport. To that end, the B7
wholeheartedly establishes itself as a formidable foe to both. Power, especially from a twin-turbo engine, comes on linearly and effortlessly, propelling the 2.5-ton
B7 to 60 mph in a claimed 3.8seconds (Alpina says add a 4/ tenths for xDrive/). Throttle response is quick but not too aggressive, making it fun and contagious to
spur those 545 horses at will. The engine, unsurprisingly, is noticeably subdued under full throttle (don't forget Alpina's philosophy), so those wanting screaming
valves or bellowing exhaust pipes will need to look elsewhere. The ride is taut, well damped, but never jarring -- respectable considering the huge 21s and low-profile rubber
-- and the steering feels light and communicative. Like the 750 on which it is based, the B7 stays impressively flat through corners, thanks in part to the 7's
active roll stabilization, yet its limits are a notch above. Turn-in is sharper, grip is more tenacious, and transitions are smoother. Moreover, the Alpina's brakes
are less grabby and easier to modulate than the 750's.
Inside the B7, Alpina enriched the standard 750i interior with unique doorsills featuring illuminated "B7" badges, Myrtle wood (The hand's down favorite)or piano
black lacquer trim
, Alpina blue gauges with red pointers, and a Lavalina leather-wrapped steering wheel with parallel stitching (not cross stitching), which is smoother to the touch.
(If you're wondering about Lavalina leather, it comes from soft-hide cows that graze between Basel and Geneva, Switzerland.) Our tester came with black leather
and lacquer trim, and its ambiance proved as stealthy as the B7's facade.Alpina, which also operates a vintage wine business, has worked exclusively with BMW for over 40 years.
Its renowned history, engineering excellence, and close relationship with the roundel all show in the B7, a potent pour for elite customers who find an
M5 is too high strung, a 750i too relaxed, and both too common.

FOUND ON VERY LATE 2014 MODELS AND ON UP,ALONG WITH MUCH FASTER PROCESSOR AND HD SCREEN
he introduction of the BMW iDrive Touch sees the development team at the BMW Group integrating a touch-sensitive pad into the iDrive system’s central control unit, the
iDrive Controller, for the very first time. Measuring 45 mm across, the multi-touch surface makes certain in-vehicle control functions more intuitive, faster and easier to use.
Incorporating the touchpad into the iDrive Controller means it is ergonomically positioned where it is easy to reach: with entry, selection and confirmation being performed
in the usual way using the control knob’s rotate-and-press mechanism, the direct proximity to the touchpad means there is no need for any fumbling around.
a function for surfing the internet is also due to be added, which will allow the mouse pointer to be controlled in exactly the same way as on many handheld devices.
Handwriting recognition.
The handwriting recognition function enables characters to be entered with the finger by simply “writing” them on the surface of the touchpad. Whereas previously
this could only be done with the “Speller” – a circular arrangement of letters in the display – by turning the control knob, the touch-sensitive surface now recognises the
letters and the Speller instantly jumps to the right point of the alphabet. To further reduce driver distraction, a voice output repeats the character that has been recognized.
Map navigation. CONTINUE TO SCROLL DOWN FOR REST OF THE AD!!!!!!
Apart from recognising handwriting, the iDrive Touch also makes it possible to navigate freely within the route map shown in the display and zoom in on it, too.
The scale is changed using the two-finger pinch gesture already familiar from many laptops und smartphones. If there is a traffic jam ahead, for example, the driver
can adjust the scale of the displayed portion of map using the touchpad, move the view to the hold-up and take a look at the suggested alternative route.
The driver can also use touch control to mark the points of interest (POIs) stored in the map, then press the control knob to confirm his choice and display
more detailed information. The later version of the iDrive Touch will furthermore allow the mouse pointer to be moved across the display while surfing the
internet, just like on a home PC. Pressing the iDrive Controller will then have the same effect as clicking with the mouse.
Relaxed driving even in heavy traffic: Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function keeps you at a constant distance from the vehicle ahead at all times. If the traffic comes to a halt,
the system applies the brakes until the vehicle comes to a standstill and then automatically moves on as soon as the road is clear.
Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function was primarily developed for journeys on motorways and major roads. Three radar sensors with a range of up to 150 metres permanently
scan the carriageway in the direction of travel. When you approach a vehicle in front, the engine management and brakes adjust your speed so that the distance is automatically kept constant – a
nd if necessary, the vehicle comes to a standstill.
When the lane ahead becomes clear or the vehicle in front speeds up, Active Cruise Control accelerates again until you reach your desired speed. To move off again after the vehicle
has stopped, the driver has to give the command to accelerate manually, either by briefly pressing the accelerator or pressing a button. If the stop lasts from 1 to 3 seconds, the vehicle
moves off automatically. Up to four cruising speeds can be pre-programmed and called up at the push of a button.
Active Cruise Control keeps your preferred speed constant within a range of 30 to 210 km/h and automatically adapts the following distance to the vehicle in front of you.
The Stop&Go function even controls the speed when the car slows down to a standstill and restarts the engine automatically after a short interval, e.g. in a traffic jam.
On multilane carriageways, the system detects whether another vehicle is only driving in the adjacent lane. Furthermore, if you wish to resume full control of the vehicle
at any time,
all you have to do is briefly press the accelerator or brake in order to deactivate the system.
Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function is not an autopilot. Consequently, if the vehicle ahead brakes harder than expected or if the system detects a critical situation,
the driver receives acoustic and optical prompts to take action. Driving in heavy traffic thus becomes noticeably easier and tiring situations such as traffic jams become
easier to master with greater concentration.
Supreme agility, unwavering stability and unmatched comfort on bends: the active chassis control system Dynamic Drive minimises body roll and distributes it
between both axles, ensuring a comfortable ride for all occupants.
Dynamic Drive uses active stabilizers on the front and rear axles to counteract the vehicle's tendency to roll in a corner. Working together with acceleration and
position sensors, a management system and other components, such as a compensation tank for sound control, the system ensures supreme agility at all speeds,
balanced reactions to load changes and remarkably precise steering.
The stabilizers continually adapt to suit the driving situation and the changes to the vehicle's self-steering behaviour. For example, when driving on the straight,
Dynamic Drive reduces the pressure of the stabilizers, treating them individually, so allowing for a highly comfortable ride - a particular benefit for rear-seat
passengers.
When cornering or making sudden changes of direction, a "sportier" setting will see the stabilisers increase the rigidity of the suspension relevant to the
intensity of the lateral forces to prevent body roll. Roll distribution between the front and back axles also helps in difficult situations.
Dynamic Drive ensures that the vehicle literally hugs the road, under- or oversteering is reduced - resulting in enhanced safety, greater comfort and an i
mpressively dynamic driving experience.
-------------------------------------
BMW Head-Up Display.Don’t lose sight of the important things. The BMW Head-Up Display projects relevant driving information directly into the driver’s line of sight. This allows him to process
it up to 50% faster and keep his attention where it belongs – on the road.
BMW vehicles with BMW Head-Up Display can be recognized by a small square depression on the dashboard. This contains a projector and a system of mirrors that
beams an easy-to-read, high-contrast image onto a translucent film on the windscreen, directly in your line of sight.
The image is projected in such a way that it appears to be about two metres away, above the tip of the bonnet, making it particularly comfortable to read.
BMW Head-Up Display halves the time it takes for eyes to shift focus from road to the instruments and back. The system’s height can be adjusted for optimal viewing.
The full-color BMW Head-Up Display in many newer BMW models makes the car even more comfortable for the driver. More colors means it’s easier to differentiate
between general driving information like speed limits and navigation directions and urgent warning signals. Important information like ‘Pedestrian in the road’
(in conjunction with the optional BMW Night Vision) is now even more clear and recognizable – and this subsequently reduces the driver’s reaction time.
The BMW Head-Up Display can easily be adjusted horizontally or vertically, via the iDrive Controller, for optimal viewing. This increased picture rotation
means the BMW Head-Up Display is individually adjustable. All in all, it enables you to register information much faster, without having to take your eyes off the road.
In addition to the speed, which is displayed permanently, the BMW Head-Up Display can also show other content depending on model and equipment.
Examples include: rpm (in BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M this is multi-coloured), navigation instructions like the Guiding information with intersection
zoom function and Lane Guiding, Speed Limit Info and the status of the Active Cruise Control. Driver Assistant warnings and the Check Control are also displayed
in the BMW Head-Up Display, e.g. pedestrian recognition from BMW Night Vision or the Collision Warning.
The driver can configure the BMW Head-Up Display to his requirements using the iDrive Controller.
-----------------------------------------------
Comfort access system. The comfort access system puts an end to searching for car keys in your handbag or pockets. Simply approach your BMW, open the door and press the Start button.Your unique key is recognized remotely by the comfort access sensors. The Adaptive LED Headlights give the BMW 7 Series its unmistakable appearance. The accent line with indicator function cuts into the top of the characteristic light rings and
redefines the expression of the entire front section.
Adaptive LED Headlights. The Adaptive LED Headlights give the BMW 7 Series its unmistakable appearance. The accent line with indicator function cuts into the top of the characteristic light rings and
redefines the expression of the entire front section.
Function and form unite in the distinctive BMW double-round headlights. Daytime running, low and high beams shine from the 3-dimensional corona rings, while the LED lights
illuminate the road with daytime intensity, and the cones of the Adaptive Headlights follow every turn in the road.
When turning slowly around a bend in the road, the integrated cornering lights automatically light up the area at the side of the vehicle. High-beam assistance offers outstanding
visibility for the driver and masks areas with the potential for glare.
--------------------------------------------------------------The latest development stage of the familiar Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function (ACC Stop & Go) uses a front-mounted camera on the rear-view mirror in addition to
the full-range radar sensors to provide an enhanced interpretation of the traffic situation ahead.
When driving in slow-moving traffic or traffic jams, the driver is able to safely move along with the flow of traffic and let the vehicle’s automatic systems handle the tasks of
stopping, pulling away again and approaching junctions where there are already vehicles waiting ahead. Combining radar and video data in this way improves detection
of other vehicles and reduces the system’s reaction time.
If a vehicle ahead brakes very sharply in free-flowing traffic, requiring the driver to take action, he or she is prompted to do so by a two-stage warning. Active Cruise
Control with automatic distance control is now available at speeds between 20 and 130 mph (30 km/h and 210 km/h). The intelligent cruise control function remains
active at speeds above 130 mph (210 km/h).

The clear, distinct colours make it easy for you to recognise important information, such as the pedestrian

Official 0-60 time is now listed at 4.4(xDrive) We turned an astounding sub 4 second 3.8 seconds seconds,on the Rear Wheel Drive models while top speed has jumped to 194 mph.
We were expecting greatness in our 750Li-based rear-wheel-drive Alpina B7, but it went a bit beyond our expectations. Its overall composure, grace and sophisticationAlpina uses slick little pushbuttons for swapping cogs in the eight-speed ZF.
As far as we're aware, Alpina can take the credit for introducing steering-wheel-mounted shifters on a road car, having added the technology way back in 1993.
