The BMW E36-M3 series was produced from 1992 to 1999. It replaced the E30. It was replaced in stages by the E46. In 1999, for the 3-Series E46 sedans debuted and a year later, in 2000, the coupes and cabriolets started production. During its nearly ten year stint, the E36 came in many flavors from the entry level 318, to the 320, 323, 325, and finally the 328. Power ranged from 139 horsepower in the 318 to 190 horsepower in the 328.

The Bmw E36- can be considered one of BMW’s most successful lines of cars. It raised BMW’s stature even more up the ladder, which would lead to nearly unstoppable success of the E46-based 3-series. Testament to BMW's superiority was Car and Driver naming the E36 3-series to its Ten Best List from 1992 to 1999, every year it was in production.

The E36-based M3 was, of course, the most sought after of the E36 models. Initially it came with a 3.0-liter 282-hp engine; however, it was only available in Europe. It was not until 1995 that North America received a 240-hp version of the E36-based M3. In 1996, the engine was boosted to 3.2-liters and, although its torque did go up, its horsepower rating stayed the same. The E36-based M3 was replaced in 2001.
