1993 BMW M5
1993 BMW M5 Description
The worse part about getting older when you're a car guy is not being able to do the things you know how to do, and like to do, yourself anymore. I can no longerlean over the front of the car working on the engine for hours or lay on my back under the car taking the oil pan plug out for an oil change, that kind of stuff. It's traumatic having to pay someone to do what you know how to do yourself but can't any longer. That being said it's time to cut loose the M5 to someone that can dedicate the time and energytake care of it. The car actually belongs to my son but has been registered to meand hasbeen covered in my driveway for 5 years. He purchased the car in 2008 and it was a daily driver until 2011 when he purchase his M3. Since then the car has been with me and I've been attempting to keep up with the maintenance. These cars will deteriorate if not regularly driven and I just don't seem to have the time anymore. Son has agreed it's best for everyone to try and sell it rather than stick it in a storage unit. This is a 1993 BMW M5 and one of only 21 Calypso Red US M5's imported between 1991-93. There were only 5 Calypso cars in 1993. The VIN shows this is the second to the last of this color imported, and I'm fairly certain, it's the only one with black interior. It has all the usual 93 model factory updates including the Motorsport front door handles, sport mirrors, and blacked out trim. We've always thought that these cars will appreciate like most M cars at some point and it's best to leave them as stock as possible. This car hasn't been lowered and the only changes are those required by age and practicality. The only major change was by the prior owner who removed the rear self leveling shocks (SLS) and installed 535i rear springs and Bilstein HD's. Once we acquired the car I replaced the delaminating original door panels with later 540 pieces but with the original M5 wood trim reattached, redid the headliner and package shelf, installed a reman M5 steering box, rebuilt the front suspension and installed Bilstein HD's to match the rear, and gave it a thorough tune up. It does have the staggered 17" Throwing star wheels. The two front were unused spares and the two 9" rears, and spare, were redone by Wheelwizard in Atlanta. Also added euro Hella headlights for better lighting than the standard sealed beams. This car no longer has catalytic convertors and has a pretty rare Fahey track pipe installed instead. It breaths a little better and isn't any louder than stock but might be an issue if you have vehicle emissions testing in your state. The cat back section is stock. The car has a lumpy idle but off idle runs well. I had the mass airflow sensor rebuilt and installed a new 02 sensor about the time I removed the cats. The air pump, which engages when the car is in warm up phase, is inop and I have just installed a short fan belt to run the AC compressor. it does use 134a freon and the air is cold. The air pump is still mounted just not in use. The body is in pretty decent condition for it's age. The prior owner hit a small deer back in 2004 and the grill and hood were replaced. Recently the clear coat on the hood started to lift so the hood was repainted and blended into the fenders and the match with the rest of the car is good. It looks much better than the original stone chipped hood. As far as I know the rest of the paint is original and does show some chipping and fading on close examination but about what you would expect for the miles and age. I have some of the receipts that came with the car from the prior owner along with most of the receipts from the work I've done. Here's a quick list of most of the important items: New brakes with Brembo drilled rotors (probably about 10k miles on them). Amsoil synthetic fluids in transmission and differential. Valvoline VR1 20/50 oil (high zinc content) used with BMW filters. M3 steering wheel installed with custom leather and M stitching. (original wheel included) New lighted shift knob. New BMW floor mats. New power steering hoses. New valve cover gaskets. New timing chain seal and gaskets. New timing chain tensioner. New water pump. Valve adjustment. New engine mounts. New trunk and hood struts. New intake boot. New clutch master and slave cylinder. New tires (tires have hardly any miles on them but have flat spotted from sitting. They might be alright after driving for a while or might need replacing but will leave that up to new owner.) New battery. Have new spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor as spares. There is a reserve on this auction to protect our investment but make your bestbid as we might accept the highest offer. This is an as is sale with no warranties implied or expressed. Shipping must be arranged by purchaser. This is a pretty rare car and a worthy addition to someone's collection.
