1998 BMW 7-Series Base Sedan 4-Door Description

If you're looking at cars for $1000, the odds are your 2016 is going exactly like mine! I moved here and needed something to get me to work, but I couldn't emotionally cope with driving garbage. I still needed the glow of a heated seat on my butt and the ability to put the accelerator down and zoom by the idiots on the road like Han Solo kicking the Millennium Falcon into hyperspace. I got it with this car. Now I'm moving out of state and you have your chance at this beaten-down but still fighting remnant of what was once BMW's top of the line vehicle.
There is plenty of stuff that doesn't work. There are definitely oil and coolant leaks, so do not come look at this vehicle if you can't be responsible about checking that stuff weekly and filling it as needed (or you can fix it). If you keep coolant in it, it will run. If you don't keep coolant in it, it will smoke. I haven't let that happen long enough to see if it will lead to not running, but I think it's a safe bet that would happen. I drive it 120+ miles daily but I put coolant into it weekly, sometimes more often. Basically, as soon as I see the temp gauge stray from exact center, I put coolant in and problem solved!
The dashboard electronic stuff works sometimes. One time I could actually see the odometer and it was about 156k. You can see the speedometer and the temp stuff because that's not digital but most of the digital print stuff works intermittently and incompletely. It has plenty of dents in it but the alignment seems to be fine. Doesn't pull one way or the other.
The air DOES blow cold. The seats are worn but NO tears. The sunroof does NOT leak. One rear power window doesn't work, but how often do you need to open that?
The tags ARE up to date, good til July of next year.
Service engine light is on (I know, shocker). There's probably other stuff you may notice immediately if you're mechanical. I'm not. I know it gets me to work reliably, has never stalled, the seat heat works and the power window goes down great for drive-throughs. I have had the oil changed and the air filter replaced. Gets about 17 mpg.
Bottom line, it is fun to drive and goes fast. If you can fix the leaking stuff, it will probably last forever. If you can't, it will probably last until you're not so broke, which is kind of the whole point with a car like this. If you're really broke, I can tell you that this is a perfect car to sleep in because the driver's seat goes completely flat! I work graveyard and frequently nap in it. If I had to live in a car, this would be one of the better choices.
