1998 BMW 3-Series Convertible Description

I am selling my BMW 323i convertible. It has 171xxx miles, and the engine and transmission are running strong. I had the car for about three years, and I have performed the following repairs and upgrades, apart from routine maintenance. It has more than $2500 worth of custom and customizable audio equipment. I had enough fun with the convertible, now I need a bigger sedan or wagon.

Recent mechanical upgrades and repairs.

  • Recently (2 months ago), I had to change the knock sensor on the engine. This is on the side of the engine block and I had to remove the intake to perform the repair. While I was at it, I changed all the old hoses, cleaned the idle control valve, cleaned the mass air flow sensor, cleaned and oiled the K&N filter. The car is now in its best shape since I bought it.
  • In 2014, I replaced the VANOS (variable Nockenwellensteuerung, BMW’s variable valve timing system) with a remanufactured unit.
  • Changed the secondary air pump and secondary air valve last 6 months)
  • Radiator (along with several cooling parts and hoses) was replaced in 2014.
  • New front rotors and brakes, new brakes installed by my mechanic (in the last month)
  • Changed the latch motor/gears of the top (last month)
  • Upgraded to 17 inch alloy wheels and new Michelin Pilot tires in 2015. Wheels have some curb rash, which is nicely hidden using those 3M wheel protectors which also look good apart from further protecting the wheels.
  • Installed new starter last year.
  • Regularly changed oil with Mobil 1 synthetic

  • Cosmetic condition

  • Recently replaced the driver seat back and bottom cushion with an almost new cushions. Leather throughout the car was regularly massaged with leather cream. Very clean interior.
  • I have changed a lot of interior parts with new ones to keep the interior like-new, eg. fan grill, grill behind the rear seat, cup holders, etc
  • Front passenger side fender and rear driver side quarter panel (near the brake light) has some dings and scratches. Also some scratches on the front bumper. Please see the pictures, they show the blemishes clearly.
  • Front bumper has some clear coat peel. Doesn’t show a lot when it is cleaned and waxed. Overall paint of the car is nice and bright.
  • Recently changed the top to body rear seal (which helped in reducing road noise).

  • Some idiosyncrasies of this E36

  • The top is fully automatic and works perfectly, but when you put it down you have to shove the fabric slightly inside so that the tonneau cover closes properly. This is common for old tops as the bands inside loose their elasticity. All this means is that you have to leave the seat when putting the top down. But no issues when you put the top up. You can do this from the drivers seat.
  • Sometimes, when you close the window using the all-up/down button, the driver window stops closing and you have to use it’s individual button. All this means that you have to use two buttons instead of one.
  • Outside temperature reads -35 F. It is a simple fix and you need to change the temperature sensor (15 to 20 dollars) located in the front of the vehicle if you really care about the car knowing the outside temperature. AC works fine, so I never bothered.
  • The secondary air pump I replaced has a hum, but the secondary air pump runs only for about a minute when you start a cold engine, so it does not bother me.
  • I recently installed the fog lights (car didn’t come with it), but the seller did not include the switch as promised in their ebay ad, so tI could not connect. So at this time, they are just cosmetic and you will need to install a switch on the dash to get it working (should be cheap to get it from ebay or pick and pull)

  • Custom Audio.

I would really like to sell this car to an audio enthusiast who can appreciate the upgrades made to this car. E36 bmws are known to have a crappy audio system and it is awfully expensive to upgrade (10 speakers, non standard sizes, etc). Lot of money and time has been spent to build the audio system. You can connect the system to a computer and make curves that suit your taste (software is included). Bluetooth phone calling is added and microphone is placed in a location that is discrete yet right in front of the driver. All the work was done while maintaining the original look of the car. For example, boston acoustics amps are hidden behind the rear seat in the cavity. Custom enclosure for Kicker L7 sub was prepared so that the recommended volume is maintained while still making it possible to remove spare wheel and not taking much space in the trunk. Following are the components used to build the system: I will include the original boxes in case you decide to ebay them when you sell the car.
