2003 BMW Z4 2.5i Description

For those of you who were watching, but missed the deadline - here is another chance . . .

This car has been a on again/off again project of mine for the past year. Unfortunately, due to a variety of personal issues, I cannot devote the time needed to finish resolving a remaining issue.

The issue is the emissions system currently returns a P0171 and P0174 code. Look them up. These are probably the two most common emissions codes returned on these vehicles, when you plug them in at Autozone. Since the code is for both banks of the motor, I'm inclined to think it is a component that would affect both sides equally. Frankly, I'm thinking Mass Air Flow sensor.

If you are a better troubleshooter than I am - this could be an easy fix that will put you in the drivers seat of a great little convertible this spring, for not a lot of money.

It's important to note: This issue DOES NOT prevent the car from running. It's a code that comes up to indicate the engine is running leaner than the MAF says it is. It could be nothing more than a vacuum leak.

Here is a list of some things I've done as either simple maintenance (or directed towards resolving the ECS codes): Replaced the CCV valve and hoses, rebuilt and re-gasketed the DISA valve (variable intake runner valve), replaced the throttle body intake gasket, replaced the intake boot, cleaned the MAF with CRC, changed the air filter and plugs. Changed the oil and filter. I also have a small sensor (that reads coolant temp) that needs to be plugged in - I just haven't had the chance to do it.

As for the rest of the car: it car shows appropriate "wear and tear" for its age, with the only real issue being the pump that raises the convertible top automatically. If you know these cars, you know the pumps go bad - it's inevitable - it's the way they were designed. For me, this is not a big problem though - as the power locking/unlocking mechanism works fine, and the top takes 5 seconds to put up or take down. The top itself is in good condition and has no holes, rips or tears. If you really want to replace the pump - they can be purchased for a few hundred bucks and will take a weekend mechanic about a weekend to replace. I just don't feel the need.
The interior is in good shape, with no rips or tears in the leather. Carpets look good. Stereo CD player works perfectly, and all other electronics are in working order. Windshield and back window look good. Just replaced the beauty trim on the windshield.
