The 2014 BMW X3 is one of the sportiest-driving yet most fuel-efficient compact crossovers; and especially if you're not budget-limited you'll almost certainly be happy with its useful technology options and finely detailed cabin.

With rather impressive gas mileage and on-road handling, the 2014 BMW X3 hits the crossover market at the right point for the German automaker. It satisfies the image-conscious in some of the same ways as the related 3-Series sedan, while granting drivers more passenger space. Despite all the arrivals in this luxury niche, the X3 remains one of the better choices.

Just don't expect the X3 to look rugged or outdoorsy. That, it doesn't; instead, it looks lean, pert, and graceful, like a tall sport wagon--but with just enough visually in common with the larger X5.

The 2014 BMW X3 continues with its all-turbocharged engine lineup, including the new TwinPower four-cylinder that was introduced last year in the X3 xDrive28i. That change booted the naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine to X3 history, but aside from losing the wonderful sound of the six there's nothing to complain about, as the new base engine is stronger and more fuel-efficient. BMW's 240-hp turbo four is the perkiest and most V-6-like of the new-generation turbo fours; foot to the floor, it moves, with no hesitation.

EXTERIOR

The BMW X3 continues, in its current generation, to go stray away from the rugged, outdoorsy look--instead following one that's more like a tall sport wagon.

With its last complete redesign in 2011, BMW gave this model more length, width, and physical presence--along with more visually in common with the larger X5. The combination of the pert, sport-wagon profile, the graceful, the swooping beltline crease, the tapered nose, and the chiseled lines next to the hood that actually serve to lower the beltline visually, together adds up to the opposite of a rugged-SUV look.

INTERIOR

The X3 makes good use of that space, with firm, properly angled front seats surrounded by copious head and leg room. Second-row passengers have even more space--it's where the added length is most noticeable, and where the X3 takes the lead over vehicles like the Q5 and GLK Class.

With seating for five, the X3 has a large 19-cubic-foot rear storage area that swells to 56.6 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down. The rear seats now all have a ski pass-through and 40:20:40 segments for better flexibility and seatback folding. In back, there's space carved out for feet, under the front seat, and head room soars. We recommend the sport seats in front for their extendable thigh bolsters and more aggressive side bolstering; they may feel firmer at first but they're better in long-distance support.

PERFORMANCE

The 2.0-liter 'N20' TwinPower four makes 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's the same power, but 39 pound-feet more torque than last year's engine. BMW says that the X3 28i accelerates to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.

BMW's turbo four is the perkiest and most V-6-like of the new-generation turbo fours; foot to the floor, it moves, with no hesitation. With direct injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and Valvetronic variable valve timing, and twin-scroll turbocharging, the BMW four spools up very quick, with peak torque reached at a diesel-like 1,250 rpm (all the way up to 4,800 rpm).

SAFETY

Standard safety features on the X3 include all the usual airbags, active front head restraints, anti-lock brakes, and stability systems. In Sport mode, drivers of a navigation-and-iDrive-equipped X3 can customize that Sport mode for differing levels of stability control. A stability-control mode with a higher threshold of intervention also aids traction and confidence in snow.

You are more than welcome to pick the car up yourself or arrange your own shipping, but if you don't know anything about it and need help I will be glad to arrange the shipping.

Shipping in the continental USis about $700.00- $850.00 from coast to coast, similar prices from Florida to N.Y. If you are somewhere in between use common sense and figure it out, or email me and I can give you quote by the next day. Shipping would be paid COD.
