1971 BMW 2002 Description

1971 BMW 2002Tii
Chassis Number: 2701240
The foundation of BMW's post-war resurgence was the four-door 1500 saloon and its derivatives, and the company capitalised on their success with the launch of a revised two-door range in 1966. Like the earlier cars, the new 1600 (later 1602) featured unitary construction, all-independent suspension, and front disc brakes, and came with a 1,573cc, 85bhp version of the Munich marque's dependable, single-overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder M10 engine. Demands for increased power, not least from the firm's US importer, Max Hoffman, led to the introduction of the 2002 in 1968. BMW's director of product planning, Helmut Werner Bönsch, and Alex von Falkenhausen, the M10's designer, had already had 2-litre engines installed in their personal 1602s, and proposed to BMW that the company should build a production model along similar lines. Enter the 2002.
The larger, 1,990cc engine produced 100bhp at 5,500rpm in single-carburettor configuration and 120bhp on twin Webers when installed in the 2002TI. The latter model never made it to the UK but its successor, the 2002tii, proved a big hit when it arrived in this country in 1971. On Kugelfischer fuel injection the 2002tii's engine produced 130bhp, which was good for a top speed approaching 120mph, an outstanding performance and one that made the car the most exciting medium-sized sports saloon of its day. Most powerful of all the normally aspirated 2002 derivatives, the 2002tii is rightly regarded as a 'modern classic' and is much sought after today.
Imported from Italy a few years ago, the 1971 example offered here has since undergone a substantial mechanical overhaul including a full rebuild of the Kugelfischer fuel injection, at considerable cost. Attention was also given to brakes and suspension. The result is a great driving 2002Tii, which starts incredibly easily and runs strongly with responsive power. The car shifts well with a good clutch and brakes, suspension and steering feel taut. All electrical systems work as they should.
Repainted in the original Sahara Beige color, the body is pretty much rust-free, but for a small blister in a front fender. Wheels are in good condition, shod with good tires with plenty of tread.
The interior was treated to a new, high quality carpet in mid-grey with black piping and the seats were restored in black leather for a far nicer driving experience in the warm climate of Southern California. All panels were restored, too. The headliner needs to be addressed to finish the interior.
The car comes with a clean, clear title.
This is a great opportunity to acquire a fantastic driving example of the ever-desirable and increasingly rare BMW racing coupe.
