We bought this car from the original owner, who had used it as a daily commuter car on the freeway from Los Altos to San Francisco. When we got it, overall it was in good shape, but needed some wheel bearings and some replacement parts for the steering.
Since then, most of the work done on the car has been maintenance, like tuneups, cleaning out the mass air flow sensor and throttle body, brake shoe replacements, front rotor replacement, oil changes, trans fluid changeout, fuel filter replacement, etc. The car has always been garaged.
Since we bought the car, it has mainly been driven on HWY 101 in California, between San Francisco and the Oregon border.
In recent times, there was some leaking starting around the camshaft and main seals, plus the radiator needed replacing. So we ended up having all the seals replaced, plus changed out the timing belt, the fan clutch, the water pump and the radiator - much more cost effective to do it all at the same time!
The original instrument cluster started to have issues with the speedometer, odometer, trip meter and water temp gauge - this occurred at around 189K. We located and installed another used working replacement cluster that had a working water temp gauge and speedometer, but the mileage was frozen at 295,869because the odometer did not work on the replacement either. The correct mileage is most close to 205,000.
The only things we have not replaced:
1) The small dent in the right passenger door, caused by someone who backed into the car while parked. The dent is not noticeable and does not affect the operation of the door and window. (The price of a replacement door is around $250 and can be located at 002 Salvage in Hayward, CA.)
2) The passenger side fog lamp lens - currently covered and protected by clear film, allowing the light to shine on the road without damage.
Meanwhile, this Beamer drives like a dream - the throttle is very responsive, and the power is immediate and available.
