This three-owner Virginia car has been well cared for. I have owned this car since 2010 and it has been garage stored. It runs and drives perfect, doesn’t have any rust, doesn’t leak anything and has only four issues.

Here are the four issues:
  • The power sunroof does not function. Just pretend it is a hard-top car — I do not believe that repairing this is cost effective. It absolutely does not leak or make any noise.
  • The previous owner was bumped on the highway in stop and go traffic and the rear bumper was replaced with a BMW M3 bumper skin. The sheet metal on the interior of the rear trunk panels do not show any damage.
  • The steering wheel leather is worn at the 12 o’clock position.
  • The front passenger seat back recline motor needs replacing. The seat moves forward and backward as well as up and down but the recline function is stuck. The good news is, it’s stuck in a desirable spot and matches the drivers seat.
  • 2017 service

    Engine work performed by local track-focused shop very familiar with M3 specific procedures.

    • Engine head gasket service — gasket began leaking coolant to outside (not inside the engine) at right rear head bolt at 195,000 miles;
    • Head reconditioned by race shop to factory specs;
    • New radiator;
    • New water pump;
    • AC charged;
    • New belts;
    • New timing tensioner/chain;
    • New Vanos unit (yes, brand new replacement Vanos — not a shop rebuild).
    Previous service and maintenance
    • Always serviced with Mobile 1 synthetic 10-30 and BMW or Mann filter elements;
    • Engine air filter and cabin filter current;
    • Poly RTABS;
    • Oil pump nut spot welded;
    • All spark plugs replaced every 30K with proper NGK and two coil packs replaced in 2015;
    • New front calipers;
    • New fog lights;
    • Passenger seat up/down motor replaced;
    • New wheel bearings (x4);
    • New door gaskets installed (May 2017);
    • New interior fan blower motor (May 2017);
    • New battery (June 2017).
    Upgrades
    • Rogue short shift kit;
    • 17 x 8.5 silver Kosei K1’s;
    • BMW E46 style in-key keyless entry with 2 keys;
    • 245-40-17 square tire setup (Brand new Kuhmo tires mounted July 15, 2017 at 201,668 miles);
    • 5mm Bimmerworld motorsport spacer installed in front for strut clearance;
    • AST 4100 coil over with 550 fronts and 650 rear Hyperco springs — rear spring perches include reinforcement plates to prevent damage to factory sheet metal;
    • Vorshlag aluminum camber plates with double row bearing on spring perch built for AST 4100 by Vorshlag;
    • Extended race wheel studs and nuts from Bimmerworld;
    • Very nice ceramic tint installed by previous owner. This tint despite being old is not purple, not scratched and has no bubbles. This was a very high-quality job.
    • Paint is coated with AMMO reflex. I have done by best to care for the black factory paint. It looks pretty amazing for a car built in 1998.
    • Kenwood head unit installed with Bluetooth audio and hands-free calling; in conjunction with an Alpine amp, MBQuart separates (pretty sure, can't remember exact brand) front stage, Boston Acoustics rear deck speakers and a 12" Kicker sub in an easy removable enclosure — this thing rocks.
    • Factory BMW chrome grille has been disassembled and the chrome rings plastic-coated flat black, slats are factory black plastic with original texture. Looks good and it’s easy to revert.
    • Aftermarket tinted corner lights.
    Car story

    This car has spent its life as a commuter vehicle. The previous two owners lived in Northern VA and commuted to Dulles area. When I bought the car, it was 100% stock. Since I’ve owned the car I’ve been very selective on modifications. The air box and exhaust are factory installed and have never swapped off the car. Nothing has ever been touched on the engine or driveline as far as performance mods except for the shifter which was replaced as a plus upgrade when dialing in the sloppy bushings. Don’t let the mileage scare you or the fact that it has an aggressive suspension installed. This car has never seen a racetrack nor been thrashed.

    I am a driving instructor/road racer and I also have a dedicated caged race car and I knew I would never use this car on track but I was certain that I wanted it to handle to my standards for everyday driving and set the car’s stance to my preference. The tires have never rubbed anywhere even with 245-40-17 Dunlop Direzza Star Spec ZII’s mounted (the widest tire I’ve ever had mounted). The factory E36 M3 brakes have always been sufficient for me and therefore no brake upgrades were done other than fresh fluid every few years and replaced front calipers. I replaced the worn factory BMW M3 suspension (I still have it) with parts sourced from Vorshlag and I have all the receipts from everything I purchased. I am an M3 fanatic and I also own a 2008 M3 coupe that I ordered and bought new and purchased this particular car to transport my kids to school every day after discovering that the two door E92 was challenging to do drop offs in the mornings. I had been looking for a five speed four door M3 for over a year when I located this clean car for sale. These sedans are rare and trying to find a five speed without ripped up interior was tough. I’ve enjoyed owning the car but the time has come to upgrade my truck and I need more money for a down payment.

    The car comes with the original window sticker (yes really), trunk toolkit, two E46 style keys, leather bound book, Factory M3 audio cassette and factory carpet M3 mats. You’ll need the factory BMW jack plate that goes in the side panel to get it up in the air with a jack — it’s included. The AST suspension adjustment wrenches are included as is the entire factory original used M3 suspension.

    As you can see from the undercarriage pics I have not spray painted over anything to hide any issues. There is not any "engine dressing" or armor all on anything (I hate that greasy crap). So you see clearly what you get.

    The car is priced fairly. You’ll find other E36 M3’s cheaper but they don’t have things like brand new tires, new Vanos units, new coolant systems and fresh engines. Trust me, they will need these things and all of these items are very expensive. This car is a delight to experience and drive.
