1976 BMW 2002 Description
1976 BMW 2002 Restored With Upgraded Performance
When the BMW New Class cars started arriving in the U.S in the 1960s they did not get a lot of attention at the outset. When 2002 model was introduced in 1968 with increased displacement to 2 L they quietly began to catch the eye of automotive enthusiasts. David E Davis wrote an article in the April 1968 Car & Driver (google it) in which he praised the 02 in very colorful prose for being a great vehicle where all the current American performance vehicles were lacking. He was carried away by the performance, handling, comfort and quality all combined in an economical sedan. BMW executives later credited this article for igniting the spark for the 02’s incredibly popularity until the 320i was introduced in 1977. They have been featured in several prominent collections recently and continue to increase in value. Up for sale is this beautiful ’76 BMW model that has been completely restored and dressed in competition livery as a tribute to race cars of the era but has not actually been raced. The front bumper has been replaced with a Bavarian Motor Sports Air Dam. A roll bar would need to be installed to enter in sanctioned competition. The restoration was performed on a completely rust free car that was stripped to bare metal and refinished in base coat/clear coat to a very high standard of excellence. The interior has been redone with factory Recaro Seats and a Sport Steering Wheel. VDO Gauges were also added. The engine is completely fresh having been gone through less than 2000 miles ago and has many additional performance add ons. All gaskets were replaced and a new fuel pump was installed. Dual Weber Carbs with Ram Air Filters were added. The exhaust was improved with addition of a Ceramic Header and a Chambered Free Flow system. Spark is provided from a Bosch Hi-Energy Coil and Wires. Crisp shifting is aided with the installation of a Bavarian Motor Sports short throw shifter and linkage. The suspension has new Bilstein Shocks and the brakes have been upgraded with Brembo aftermarket units. This 02 runs as good as it looks, everything works as it should. And it is completely road worthy. All of the work has been done to a very high standard, and it is totally a “No Disappointments” vehicle. Everything mechanically and cosmetically has been attended to for a full restoration. The indicated mileage is 90K but true mileage is unknown and mileage is exempt on vehicles of this age.
