2003 BMW 5-Series 525 iT Sport Wagon Description

This car was my mother’s car; she owned it since 40k mi. It has been meticulously mechanically maintained. It is literally a grandma driven car. All of the suspension is OEM and all bushings are like new. Garage kept.

The car suddenly developed a misfire. We traced it down to a bent valve. We believe the DISA pin came loose and got stuck in the valve on #4. Cold Compression is 170psi across the board except #4 which is 0psi. The other cylinders are even. The engine has never been overheated or had any other issue before.

She recently had the oil pan and oil filter housing gaskets replaced. The DSC module has been replaced with new OEM. Alternator has been replaced as well as the full cooling system and water pump (hoses and all). Has Dr Vanos rebuilt vanos unit on it. Oil separator has been replaced. Cam position sensors have been replaced.

After the loss of compression, I had the car inspected (everything gone over) at Groves Automotive in Roanoke, VA. This car is mechanically in excellent shape. No rust, everything is tight. No issues with transmission or drivetrain. I had all computers checked for codes, none (Except engine as stated above). My mother decided to replace the car anyway instead of fixing it just because she was ready for something newer. Call 540-345-7519 and talk to Conner about the car. The car is currently there for anyone who wants to look at it or have it inspected.

This car is a perfect candidate for a swap. The chassis is in the condition of a car with under 100k, it was literally grandma driven. It is a factory sport package car and the last year of the E39. It has a rack and pinion steering. I have too many projects right now to take on another.

The car could also be repaired by pulling the head and replacing a few valves. The shop estimate to repair was around $1500 parts and labor. Most of that is labor as it’s a 15hr book time job to replace the head and retime the engine. This could be a cheap fix for anyone who is willing to spend the time to do the work.

Cosmetically

Pros: The car has been garage kept. The interior is in excellent shape. No UV sun damage.

Cons: She had a habit of pulling over parking spot curbs when she first got the car which caused the paint on the front bumper to crack. It would look good with an M5 bumper! There are some scratches on the hood where one of her cats slept on the hood in the garage. They might buff out, I never tried.
