1988 BMW M5 M5 Description
This 1988 BMW M5 is a black/black example. Only 1,340 were produced for NA, which only 101 made it to Canada.
The factory S38 engine was given a comprehensive $15K+ rebuild 1000 miles ago which included a ported and polished head and intake, Euro headers, new rings and crankcase bearings, new clutch, and more detailed below. All work was completed by Phil Bolton of Art Garage in south Florida. Additionally, the suspension has been upgraded and the car is reported to be in fine working order. The car is sold with ten years of service records, a clean CarFax and a clean Florida title.European bumpers, valence and lights have been fitted to sharpen up the look of this E28 M5. The car was resprayed in it’s factory black by the previous owner; the paint is in fair condition but clean throughout. All body-panel VIN tags remain in place and the included CarFax shows no accidents.
The suspension system has been recently serviced and mildly upgraded with Spax springs over Bilstein Sport shocks and a Moosehead Engineering control arm kit. Additionally, new suspension bushings, dog bones and wheel bearings were installed. The car now sits nicely over its original split-spoke alloy wheels. Stock brakes have new brake pads.
The body looks to be straight throughout and rust is claimed to be limited to a 1/16″ bubble on the left front edge of the hood. The trunk seal was recently replaced.
This M5 retains its factory-fitted Black leather interior, which is in good condition throughout. The front seats are slightly worn but look nice for the age and mileage. Carpets are clean along with a tidy headliner and trunk. The dashboard is crack-free and well-preserved.
All electronics and functions are said to be in working order with the exception of the stereo. A Nakamichi head-unit has been installed, but speakers need to be fitted. A new A/C compressor was recently fitted but there is a leak that will be fixed prior sell date.
Rear seats are in good condition. Many E28 M5s were produced with tan leather but black/black is 1 out of 30 in the U.S / 1 out of 70 in Canada
When the owner before me acquired this car, it was showing low engine compression. The original 3.5L engine was given a $15K+ rebuild, with receipts included in the sale. All mechanical work was completed by Phil Bolton of the Art Garage in south Florida. Phil has 35+ years of experience in building high-performance European engines.
Documentation can be seen in the photo gallery and the car is sold with 10 years of service records. Cylinders are running between 205-220 PSI in the following order: 1-205 2-220 3-215 4-210 5-210 6-205.
Highlights of the rebuild include:
Port/polish of cylinder head and intakeB36/B38 camshaftEuropean headersNew rings and crankcase bearingsNew water pumpNew timing chain/rails/tensionerNew rear-end sealsFrank Fahey crank hubAll new Redline fluids
In addition, the 5 speed transmission was looked over and determined to be in good working order; a new clutch and UUC short shift kit were installed. The car runs and drives very well with a nice throaty sound coming from the factory exhaust, which has had the catalytic converter removed. The engine pulls strong throughout the power band and the car tracks well at speed.
After the rebuild, the undercarriage of the car was detailed and now presents as clean throughout with no evidence of any major rust.
Described as a very nice driver-level car, this 1988 BMW M5 has had a good amount of time and money invested to bring it to its current condition. It could be brought to the next level with new paint or simply driven as-is.
