Background

If you are like me, you think that modern cars are too big, too heavy, and too complicated—all of which detract from the driving experience. BMW is one of the guiltiest offenders of this trend, but in 2008 it threw purists like myself a bone in the form of the 1 Series. Heralded as the spiritual successor of the iconic 2002, the 1 Series was smaller than its 3 Series sibling, but because it was a BMW, it didn’t compromise on power, luxury, or a sporting driving experience. Excluding the 1 Series M Coupe, the most potent 1 Series was the 135i with M Sport Package. Face-lifted 2011 and later 135i’s came with the N55 twin-scroll turbocharged engine, a more reliable evolution of the twin turbocharged N54 engine. The platform was so good that BMW used a tuned variant of it (the N54) in the 1 M Coupe. In addition to cosmetic upgrades, the 135i M Sport Package included an M 3-spoke steering wheel, 18-inch Style 261 M Double Spoke wheels, and 15mm lower suspension. The virtually lag-free twin-scroll turbo power coupled with the lighting-fast shifting of the 7-speed M double clutch transmission (DCT) makes the 135i a seriously fast car. In convertible form, it’s a stylish sleeper that allows spectacular views of the Colorado landscape to the unobstructed exhaust soundtrack of that N55 pulling to redline. Relatively limited production numbers and its replacement in the U.S. market by the 2 Series ensure that the 1 Series will be a future collectable. The time to get one is now, when pristine, low mileage examples are still available.

Summary

I am selling this 2012 BMW 135i (E88) Convertible M Sport on consignment for a friend. The owner of Gebhart BMW originally ordered and purchased it in April of 2012 for his wife. She drove it through the summer before my friend bought it from Gebhart. It has always been a second car, enjoyed only on fair weather days and spared harsh winter conditions. The owner of Gebhart ordered it with nearly every option (full list is below). In addition to the M Sport Package, it came with the cold weather and premium packages, which included power and heated seats, premium sound, navigation, auto dimming mirrors, and a host of other amenities. All maintenance has been done at the correct intervals by Gebhart BMW. In preparation for sale it received a fresh oil change, rear tires, a cabin air filter, brake fluid flush, and new wiper blades. It is an extremely clean example that has been adult owned and properly cared for. It comes with all records organized in a 3-ring binder, a clean Carfax, all-weather floor mats, all owner’s manuals, the original window sticker, and two key FOBs.

Exterior

In 2011 the 1 Series got a facelift, called life cycle impulse in BMW speak, that featured revised front and rear bumpers, along with improved headlights and taillights. The exterior of this car is nearly perfect, very much like the day it left the show room floor. Space Grey Metallic paint is one of the best 1 Series colors period. The leading edges are protected by 3M Clear Bra. The only imperfections are some very minor driveway curb scuffs on the under side of the front splitter. It requires getting down to eye level to notice. In preparation for the sale, the owner had a scratch on the driver’s side door and front fender corrected by high-end body shop SVE. The windshield and side window glass are perfect, as are the convertible top and rear window glass. The side and rear windows are lightly tinted at legal levels. The 18-inch Style 261 wheels are straight and true; the passenger side wheels have a very minor curb rash that requires searching to find (pictures are on our website if you are reading this else where). The Dunlop SP Sport 01 runflat tires have 70% front and 80% rear tread remaining.

Interior

The interior is as flawless as the exterior. Open the door and you are greeted with the same Boston leather smell it had when it left the factory. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpets have no stains or tears and are protected by factory all-weather floor mats. The seats have no bolster wear or blown out stitching. The M 3-spoke leather steering wheel is wrapped in perforated leather that is in excellent condition. The cluster and iDrive display have no failed pixels. All functions work correctly; the heat blows warm, the air conditioning blows cold, the power and heated seats work, the Harmon Kardon Premium sound system is amazing, and the power convertible top goes up and down with the push of a button in only twenty-two seconds. The iDrive systems menu shows no check panel indications, the oil level and tire pressures are green, and there are no service alerts.

Mechanical

When you buy a used BMW, you buy the previous owner’s stewardship. This 135i has had excellent stewardship. The seller has completed all regular service and had the oil changed at less than BMW’s intervals—often annually since the mileage interval was never reached. The last service was done in January of 2016 at 19,225 miles. It included a fresh oil change, cabin air filter, and brake fluid flush. The brake pad thickness was inspected and found to be within limits with front pads at 7.5 mm and rear pads at 8.2 mm. The N55 engine idles smoothly and pulls strong to redline. The owner has always adhered to RPM oil temperature warm-up limitations, revved it regularly through the RPM range to prevent carbon build up, and always allowed proper turbo-cool down times after spirited driving. The N55 is one of BMW’s finest engines, having none of the post-development issues of its N54 predecessor. The M Double Clutch DCT 7-speed gearbox is the perfect compliment to the N55 engine. It allows the benefit of a manual, with lighting fast shifting done automatically or through steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. I teach performance driving for the BMW club, the M DCT’s telepathic shifting is so good that when I instruct in or drive a car equipped with the M DCT on the track, I usually leave it in auto mode—and I am a staunch manual advocate!

This is a turn-key 135i Convertible M Sport. We would like to find a buyer who will enjoy, care for it, and appreciate it for years to come. We have priced it at NADA Blue Book. Please go to our website to see extensive pictures if you are reading this elsewhere.
