The owner had a 1955 Bel Air when he was 19. He owned it for one year and someone pulled out in front of him totaling his car. He always wanted to have another one.When he was 55 years old he saw this 55 Bel Air in the thumb of Michigan and had to have it. He did the off frame restoration over the course of 6 years from 1991 to 1996.
The restoration was a labor of love. He insisted it would only be done with original parts. Which took him on a quest to accomplish this all over the United States. The original engine was dropped back into the car. Theodometer was working. It did stop in 1999. This car was only driven to shows. They estimated that the most miles put on were 100 per year. So actual miles 22,783. However, the miles since the off frame restoration completed in 1996approximately 1,500 miles.
In early 2011 the owner entered it in one last show. He was feeling tired and didn't go out and putter in the pole barn and spend time with his car like he always had. In September 2011 he wasdiagnosed with bone cancer. In late October 2011 he passed away.
After his death the family could not sell the car, because it brought such joy to him. So once every year they would come and start the car up and let it idle. Then they would take it for a small drive around the same 5 blocks. When they would bring it back into the garage they would disconnect thebatterycables like their father had always done, cover the car and turn out the lights.
