Here is an American classic. The values on these cars has already increased 25% in the 2 years since I found this one. This is a fairly low mileage car for its age. It sat undriven for nearly 16 years when I found it. Its virtually all original. Original motor, transmission and all the sheet metal is also original with VIN tags on all of it. The motor runs excellent. I've done a lot of work to get it in top condition. All the engine sensors are new, I've detailed the engine and engine compartment. Its quite clean and looks great. Both front and rear suspensions are all new with new bushings, shocks, and sway bar components. All the fluids in the rear end, transmission and motor are new. The brakes are also new.
This car is somewhat rare because its the 5.0 TPI 5 spd. I'm told that only about 20% of the 1987 IROC's were 5 spd. Then the car also has the G92 rear end which has dics brakes, posi traction and 3:42 gears. This is the most desirable and most collectible combo. To add to it's rarity the car was also built with virtually every option for 1987 including grey leather seats (long gone) and the Delco/Bose sound system, (which I have all the components to but some do not work correctly). The interior you see in the photos is not the original interior but I don have the original interiors minus the grey leather seats. The interior that is now in the car is black clothe and in EXCELLENT condition with zero rips, tears or stains. The original IROC 16 inch wheels have been restored painted and cleared and are among the best you'll ever find. The tires have 75% tread left.
I have 4 IROC's and I hate to see this one go but I just don't have the space for them all. this is the lowest mileage of all my cars and it runs stronger than all but one other car. It's just a solid car. But it needs one thing and it needs that one thing quite badly. It needs some minor body work. Fill in dings and dents and then it needs to be painted. There is no major body damage and zero rust (CA car). There are the typical amount of little dings in the doors and hood. It cannot be painted as is without some minor body work. But once this car is painted it will be a 9 out of 10 car.
Here is a break down from front to rear of the car.
BODY - All the sheet metal and plastic body parts are in good condition with basic body work needed for paint prep. There is a medium size dent in the drivers door that is an easy fix and then there are many minor "rock" size dings. All the sheet metal on 1987 IROC's were tagged with the VIN number and ALL the sheet metal on this car is the original metal (rare) except the drivers front fender which I still have (it has some wrinkles in it but easy fix)) and will include with the car. All of the panels fit very well.
ENGINE - This motor runs very well. Starts instantly every time. I have detailed much of the engine bay. It shows very nicely. There is no grease or grime. The car has never leaked any fluids. These cars are known for running warm/hot because GM programmed them that way. But its not good for the engines so I put in a brand new radiator and a JET 60600 temp switch and now the car never ever gets above 200 degrees! I replaced the nasty old fluid bottles with new ones. The TPI runners, plenum and intake manifold were bead blasted and detailed and look great. The runners are NOT dented (also very rare!). Transmission is the Borg Warner T5 (non world class in 1987) Because this is also the G92 rear end withe 3:42 gears the 5th gear in the trans is the 2:95 ratio. All the most rare and desirable options. The exhaust is not original. it's a 3 inch that stuffs down into a 2.5 inch Edelbrock Ram Series TrueFlow muffler (never understood why people do that). But it sounds fantastic.
All the GLASS is in great shape but the windshield needs to be reset and resealed as it leaks a little air in front of the drivers corner.
TIRES have 80% tread left but do not all match. Rears are Yokohamas and fronts are BFG. All are 245/50/16 as they should be. The WHEELS are original 16 inch 85-87 IROC wheels. They were media blasted, repainted the correct GM gray and then non gloss clear coated just like the factory did. But in retrospect I would clear them in a gloss next time. These look awesome and are far better then 99% of what you see out there. They can be re cleared in gloss if you want to do that.
SUSPENSION - every bit of the suspension is less than 6 months old. Did the front about 6 months ago and the rear less then one month ago. All new bushings everywhere, all new shocks/struts, new tie rods etc. This was done with OE replacement parts from AutoZone and the parts are stock original. NO performance suspension parts were used. But as noted, its ALL new. I cleaned and detailed the under side of the car when I rebuilt the suspensions. All the trailing arms, A arms, sway bars, panhard, rear end etc, all of it was media blasted and painted with POR-15 chassis black. The bottom of the car looks better than the top!
INTERIOR- everything in the interior works except the power door locks. They work half ass and of 3 other IROC's I have none of them work any better. One can get them working with a lot of effort but it just aint worth the effort to me. The dash pad is mildly (not bad) cracked and covered with a carpet cover. The console lid is very good but not perfect. Its better than 90% of those that I have seen. Those are the only deficiencies in the interior. All the switches and controls work well. AC blows very cold and was just serviced. The rear hatch pull down motor works properly and has new nylon guides just installed. Brand new floor carpet from ACC carpets. The original interior of this car was grey leather and it was in very poor condition. My other 87 IROC is a convertible and I found ONE person who knew how to stitch the 1987 seat pattern (its diagonal) and it took her 8 months and a small fortune to make exact grey leather replacements for my convertible. There was no way I was going to do that again on this car. So I have replaced the ENTIRE interior of this car and switched it all to black. Those are original 1987 seats with the proper stitch pattern that I got from CL. The seats are flawless with no rips tears or stains and the seat foams are solid and springy. The seat belts all work like they're supposed to. All the gages work correctly. The power window motors and switches work perfectly. The headliner and overhead console are perfect. This was a very very high option car and it also came with the Delco/Bose sound system which included two front kick panel speakers and a special rear cargo area deck lid with two Bose speakers there as well. I have the entire Bose system for this car but it is in boxes. The head unit radio does not work and because you cant use the Bose speakers with other radios (you can but its difficult to do) I just took the whole Bose system out. but it is all there and well preserved. I did install two dash speakers and two sail panel speakers which is where the speakers were installed in non Bose cars. However, you can see that there is no radio head unit. You can choose yours once you get the car home.
I have tried to describe this car honestly and in as great detail as I can think of. It's not a show car but could be with a paint job and some few details. I've actually done all the hard work. All you have to do is take to a shop and get it painted. You can drive this car anywhere and its got a ton of life left in it as it only has about 70k miles on it. Contact me with any questions.
