This is a 69 original mile 2002 Corvette Z06 that is essentially still in the wrapper. The first and still current owner brought the car home from Vandergriff Chevrolet in Arlington, Texas as a new car and it has been kept in pristine condition since, the Monroney Label still affixed to the front windshield. The original MSRP reads $51,970 plus a $3,000 "Market Value Adjustment" rider, to give you a sense of the "hot cakes" level demand these cars commanded when new. In 2002 the C5-R repeated its one-two victory at Le Mans and also dominated the GTS class in the American Le Mans Series. The C5-R was the "R" variant of the track-ready this Z06 fixed roof coupe that took showrooms by storm at the turn of the 2000's. Even the premium cost color is called "Millennium Yellow". Dubbed an "Ultra High Performance" machine by the automotive press, the Z06 call outs even read "Z06 405 HP", proudly referring to the 5.7L LS6 stuffed under the hood. To give that figure context, the 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena made 400hp and only 275 lb/ft of torque, all for $100,000 MORE than the Z06. Being the first affordable performance car to push past the 400hp barrier, this is the beast that sparked the New Muscle Renaissance we still currently enjoy.

Chevrolet engineered several modifications for the Z06 to best use the increased power. Starting with the most structurally rigid body style, the hardtop or FRC, new components included: uprated FE4 suspension, larger wheels and tires, revised gearing ratios, and functional brake cooling ducts. The Z06 is 38 pounds lighter than a standard C5 hardtop thanks to weight-saving measures such as a titanium exhaust, thinner glass, lighter wheel, non-EMT tires, reduced sound proofing, fixed rear radio aerial, and a lighter battery.

Some are quick to point out that we've blown past that in recent years, with cars boasting 580, 662, and even 707 hp. Consider the whole picture, the '02 Z06 only weighs 3,100 pounds and cranks out 400 lb/ft of torque. Even as a 15 year old, her performance numbers still stack up well to this current group of youngsters. In fact, if you wanted to match this power to weight ratio, you'd have to shell out $72k for a new Z/28.
