Chevy P30 Stepvan - Cummins Turbo Diesel
1995 Chevrolet P30 Description
Low mileage Chevy P30 Stepvan with Cummins 4bt Turbo Diesel engine. Smog-exempt in California. Gets about 18 miles per gallon.
Previously owned by Frito Lay and used as a chip delivery truck. I bought this stepvan one year ago to convert into a tiny house truck to live in while getting my life started in the Bay Area. Now my life has begun a new chapter, and while the stepvan no longer makes sense for me, it may make sense for you.
This was my solution to affordable housing the bay area. By living in the truck instead of an equal sized room (~150 square feet) in the bay area, I saved over $20k in rent expenses for the year.
I did a pretty quick and dirty conversion. If you just need something that works as a mobile living space to start with, this will do the job. If you want to make it nice and do your own conversion project, I'd recommend that you strip it down to the framing and subfloors and start from there.
Here's a list of features that I added or came with the truck:
- Skylight- 200w Solar Panel- 75ampere Deep Cycle Marine Battery- Fantastic Fan- LED strip lighting along the ceiling- Insulation (House grade pink fiberglass insulation in walls and ceiling)- Floating Framing (Everything has been framed in such away that you can unscrew and add your own inside configuration. It's also floating to help with sound insulation)- Lofted Bed- Work Desk (under bed)- Kitchen Counter- Storage Bins- 3 Closet Areas (ready for storage, clothes, custom fit for bins)- Subfloor- Backup camera- Wall Panels (These have warped in some places)- Floor Boards (Thin plywood planks as a temporary solution)- Tie Down Eyelets (heavy duty eyelets in the floor for hauling a motorcycle)- Couch with underneath storage
If you want this as a work truck, it's easy to gut it.
The cargo area is roughly 18ft long, 7 ft wide, and just under 8ft tall. The entire truck is about 26ft long from bumper to bumper. And since it's a diesel vehicle model pre 1997, it's smog-exempt in CA.
Latest improvements:
- New Battery- New Starter- New Throttle Cable
Known Issues:
- Interior dome lights aren't working
