ON THE TRIM CODE 731B FOR MEDIUM BRIGHT BLUE AND DARK BRIGHT BLUE WITH BUCKET SEATS THAT ARE TWO TONE. THIS 731B TRIM CODE IS RARE FOR A BIG BLOCK SS CAR. DALE MACINTOSH CHEVELLE EXPERT AND AUTHOR OF CHEVELLE DATA AND ID GUIDE AND OTHER CHEVELLE BOOKS, OWNER OF CHEVELLESTUFF.NET, AND MODERATOR OF THE CHEVELLE REGISTRY HAS STATED TO ME PERSONALLY IN AN E-MAIL:
"As for the 731-B in an SS396, this is the first documented example I’ve seen.

"
Likewise the 731 trim code is shown available in both the Malibu and SS396 sport coupes and convertibles. Also note description of "Med. Bright Blue" and "Dk. Bright Blue" as opposed to simply "Dk. Blue" and "Med. Blue" of the combination above. As with trim code 729, no SS396 series has been found with this two-tone combination."
731 ~ Dk. Bright Blue, Med. Bright Blue Imitation Leather(1)
13817-67 also depicted in Chevrolet parts manual as a two-tone combination but has not been seen in a two-tone combination in any SS396 to date) - [12,542]
THIS MAY BE THE ONLY 1966 CHEVELLE SS 396 #138 VIN BIG BLOCK CAR EVER FOUND THAT GM PRODUCED WITH THIS SPECIAL INTERIOR OPTION 731B ON TRIM TAG IN TWO TONE BLUE. IT WAS OFFERED IN 1966, BUT NOT SEEN OR FOUND ON AN SS 138 VIN CAR UNTIL THIS CAR WAS FOUND. I HAVE SEEN ONE OTHER 731B CODE ON ANOTHER SS396 138 VIN CAR, BUT IT DID NOT HAVE TWO-TONE INTERIOR. I WOULD SAY THIS CAR WOULD MAKE A GREAT MUSEUM PIECE OR A SPECIAL CAR FOR A COLLECTION, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED!
BACKGROUND ON CAR:
I HAVE BEEN WORKING IN THIS CAR FOR MANY MONTHS. IT WAS ALREADY VERY NICE WHEN I PURCHASED IT (SURVIVOR CAR), BUT I IN PAST FEW MONTHS HAD ENTIRE CAR REPAINTED CORRECT COLOR IN VERY EXPENSIVE STANDOX PAINT AND TOLD THE HIGHLY QUALIFIED BODY SHOP THAT CAR HAD TO BE RAZOR STRAIGHT AND FACTORY COLO, ENGINE AND TRANS FULL REBUILD, AND MUCH MORE. TRUNK COMPARTMENT FULLY DETAILED WITH CORRECT BLACK AQUA SPATTER AND ENGINE BAY FULLY DETAILED. CORRECT ENGINE BAY, TRUNK, GLOVE BOX AND SUSPENSION STICKERS AND DECALS FOR 1966. CARS FLOOR BOARDS AND UNDER CARRIAGE FULLY RUST PROOFED AND DETAILED!
FURTHERMORE, THIS CAR HAS THE GM #3866948HOLLEY HIGH RISE INTAKE (HOLLEY CAST INTO THE INTAKE BY GM) AND HOLLEY 4-BARREL 3139 LIST CARBURETOR ON THE L35 396 ENGINE, NOT QUADRAJET. EDH BLOCK STAMPING FOR HOLLEY. YOU WILL NOT FIND THIS ON 1967 OR LATER CHEVELLE L35 ENGINES OR 1966 CALIFORNIA BUILT CARS, ONLY A LIMITED GROUP OF 1966 L35 CHEVELLE CARS RECEIVED BLOCK STAMPING "EDH". THE ENGINE BLOCK WAS STAMPED WITH AN EXTRA THREE DIGIT CODE, IN THIS CASE THE "H" AS A DESIGNATION THAT THIS ENGINE WAS TO RECEIVE HOLLEY INTAKE AND CARBURETOR LIKE THE HIGHER L78 375HP CAR, NOT THE ROCHESTER QUADRAJET THAT ONE NORMALLY SEES ON MOST L35 AND OTHER LOWER HORSEPOWER 396 ENGINES.
SO HERE IS A LOT MORE INFORMATION ON THIS CAR:
IT IS A TRUE SS #138 VIN. IN MANY WAYS THIS CAR IS A SURVIVOR CAR. MOST OF THE CAR IS FACTORY DATED ORIGINAL SHEET METAL. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT CAR HAS FACTORY HEADLINER, DOOR PANELS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, AND MANY OTHER SURVIVOR QUALITIES. WHEELS ARE GM DATE CODED AND THE TIRES ARE NOS REDILINE. I FOUND A GM BUILD SHEET TAG UNDER THE DRIVERS CHAIR, SO IT MAY EVEN BE THAT THE CAR STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL SEAT COVERS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE, HOWEVER SINCE I DID NOT BUY THE CAR NEW AND CANNOT PROVE THIS, I GUARANTEE NOTHING AS "ORIGINAL" BORN TO THE CAR. CAR IS BEING SOLD AS IS WHERE IS FOR WHAT IT IS HERE IN 2017.
THIS CAR WAS ORIGINALLY DELIVERED TO KEN BENDER MOTORS INC IN CAMBRIDGE, OHIO. THE GM OFFICIAL PRODUCTION DATE WAS 06/10/1966.I BOUGHT FROM A HOBBYIST WHO HAD THE CAR FOR AROUND 15 YEARS AND TOOK IT TO CRUISE SHOWS. CAR IS A 06B (ASSEMBLED JUNE 1966 2ND WEEK) AND IT WAS BUILT BY GM AT ATLANTA. PAINT AND INTERIOR ARE CORRECT MATCHING TRIM TAG F-F MARINA BLUE WITH RARE HIGH OPTION SPECIAL BEAUTIFUL BLUE TWO TONE INTERIOR PACKAGE FROM GM 731B BUCKET SEATS WITH MEDALLIONS AND DELUXE SEAT BEATS / DELUXE INTERIOR HIGH OPTION CAR. POWER BRAKES, ORIGINAL KNEE KNOCKER TACH, CLOCK IN CENTER CONSOLE AND FACTORY DASH PANEL WITH FACTORY VOLT GAUGE, ENGINE TEMP, OIL PRESSURE, ETC RPO U14.

- $68,000Condition #1 vehicles are the best in the world. The visual image is of the best vehicle, in the right colors, driving onto the lawn at the finest concours. Perfectly clean, the vehicle has been groomed down to the tire treads. Painted and chromed surfaces are mirror-like. Dust and dirt are banned, and materials used are correct and superbly fitted. The one word description for #1 vehicles is "concours."
- #2 Excellent$44,300#2 vehicles could win a local or regional show. They can be former #1 vehicles that have been driven or have aged. Seasoned observers will have to look closely for flaws, but will be able to find some not seen by the general public. The paint, chrome, glass and finishes will all appear as excellent. No excessive smoke will be seen on startup, no unusual noises will emanate from the engine. The vehicle will drive as a new vehicle of its era would. The one word description for #2 vehicles is "excellent."
Buyer's Guide from Hemmings Muscle Machines
March, 2012 - Mike McNessor
There's something formal, yet trim and tough about the styling of Chevrolet's 1966-'67 Chevelle--like a mixed martial arts fighter in an Armani suit. Buying a 1966 or 1967 SS 396 Chevelle today is not difficult, as they've never been in short supply: 72,272 SS 396s were built in 1966 and 63,000 were built in 1967. Of course, some of the more desirable performance drivetrain combinations and options are rare and will drive the price of a car up. Chevelle SS 396s are perennially in demand, so you won't find them at fire-sale prices. But this isn't news to anyone who has shopped second-generation Chevelles for the last 30 years--they've always commanded prices on par with rarer muscle cars. For instance, at Barrett-Jackson's Palm Beach auction last year, a restored Marina Blue four-speed SS 396 convertible with the 325hp 396 (Lot 652.1) sold for $59,400. At B-J's Scottsdale sale in 2011, a two-owner Marina Blue SS 396 four-speed hardtop with a 360hp 396 (Lot 426.1) sold for $61,600. At Mecum's Kansas City, Missouri, auction last December, a restored Granada Gold 1967 SS 396 350hp four-speed coupe (Lot S155) sold for $42,000.
