1984 Chevrolet Camaro Description

1984 Camaro Z-28
Two-Seat Roadster Conversion by Autoform
Beginning in 1983 until 1986, GM sent approximately 1100 Camaro and Firebird vehicles to Autoform in Indiana for conversion. These cars were then returned and sold through the dealerships, making this an authentic factory conversion. There were no convertibles offered during those years, so if you wanted the top down, this was the way to go.
Apparently every Camaro and Firebird version was availble for this conversion - Camaro, Berlinetta, Z-28, Firebird, Formula, and Trans Am.
The hatch, rear interior, and roof were removed, Modification was done to the body to allow a fiberglass panel to extend all the way from the rear of the car to the front seats. It opens, allowing access to the carpeted hatch. The lift supports from the hatch are used to support the fiberglass panel. "Headrests" are molded in behind the front seats. There is also a small lid to allow access to the "trunk area" that can be opened with a key without popping the entire hatch.
The top that was cut off was covered in canvas and fitted with convertible latches and hinges. It manually releases and the top folds back and stores in the hatch area behind the seats.
Everything from the doors forward, with the exception of the convertible latches at the top of the windshield, is original 1984 Z-28 and therefore, easy to work on, replace, or find.
There is convertible-style bracing under the car to strengthen the chassis since the roof has been removed. There is also bracing behind the seats.
Beginning in 1987, GM again released a regular convertible, and these cars were no longer made. Very few were ever released, and even fewer survive to this day, making this a very interesting and rare car to own.
****************
This 1984 Z-28 roadster is running and does move under its own power. The second owner stopped driving it 3 years ago and it still has some old gas in it which is not fully burned out, so it runs rough. I added a little good gas and gas treatment and have been running it from time to time over the last couple weeks to get it out.
The car overheated momentarily during one of the high-idling sessions while burning out the gas, but I noticed it almost immediately and shut it down. I do not know if the thermostat was stuck, but that is where I am leaning. The alternator is not keeping the battery up. I have a new alternator but have not installed it.
I replaced the hood lift supports. The fiberglass rear-section lift supports should be replaced. These are readily available aftermarket, as Auto Form just re-used the supports from the hatch that they removed when making the conversion.
Tires are good. Body is decent, but does need some minor touch-up here and there. The hood has signs of previous repair, and has a small rust hole in it as well. Interior is worn BUT the dash pad appears to be PERFECT. I just sold one of these recently, so I know what they are worth. Good dash pads are tough to find in these bodystyles. The windshield is cracked, and the reflection in the photo makes it look like the dash is cracked, but it is not.
The top needs to be replaced. Any quality canvas shop can do the job. It will have to be custom made, but they should be able to use what's there as a template.
This could be driven on nice days with only very minor work. Buy it now and be driving it by next weekend.
Clear title (lien release included). Comes with one set of keys. I will try to get more photos, but it has been raining non-stop for weeks.
