Indeed, we were majorly bummed when GM, struggling to stay alive, pulled the plug on a Z28 version of the new Camaro, which was believed to have around 570 bhp. Now, though, Hennessey Performance Engineering has filled that void with the HPE550, a supercharged Camaro with a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 that puts out a whopping 562 bhp.

For an idea of how hard the HPE550 plants you in your seat, consider this: The car we tested, with the 6-speed manual transmission, hits 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds, four-tenths quicker than the potent SS we tested in July. And in the quarter mile, the quick-revving Hennessey car runs a 12.3 at 120.3 mph, which puts the SS to shame and means this Camaro can (and presumably will) consume stock Corvettes for dinner. Wheelspin in 2nd and 3rd gears is not uncommon with a heavy right foot, even with the massive 315/20ZR-20 Pirelli P Zero rear tires.

The secret to the power? A belt-driven Magnuson Roots-type blower that supplies 6.0 psi of boost to the LS3 V-8, which is equipped with high-flow injectors and a polished cold-air induction system. With Hennessey engine mapping and a stainless-steel cat-back exhaust, this powerplant idles smoothly and is quite tractable, making for easy everyday driving. Open the throttle a bit more, however, and the car comes alive, revving to its 6600-rpm redline with ferocity.

As the photos reveal, the HPE550 is far from just a Camaro with a supercharged heart. Other aesthetic details include requisite badges inside and out, plus tastefully designed SC side graphics.

At the time we drove the car, the suspension tuning wasn't quite finalized. In a word, it was firm, which helped the HPE550 to weave through our slalom at 69.3 mph and lap our skidpad at 0.93g, improving on the stock SS's ratings of 66.8 mph and 0.87g.

The HPE550 — the new Z28, if you will — can be ordered as an entire vehicle from Hennessey (or an authorized Chevrolet dealer) for $59,950, which doesn't include the price of the car but does include a warranty, a numbered plaque and a half-day driving course at Lonestar Motorsports Park in Texas. On the other hand, a 550 powertrain upgrade kit is also available, which Hennessey sells (installed) for $24,950 or via mail order for $18,950. And as most of the parts are available individually from Hennessey, you might just convert your Camaro into a stealthy Shelby GT500-beater as time and budgets allow.
