History
I purchased the car in May 2016 from a good friend's father. Mike was a GM employee, and treasured the car for 28 years. He bought it when the AC Spark Plug division executive who special-ordered it turned it in with only 3,700 miles on it.
Mike moved to a retirement golf community in Sun City, Arizona in 1999, and stopped driving the car in 2007 when he got a golf cart — which you can drive on the streets there. The car sat covered in his garage until I purchased it when he went to a care facility in May 2016.
I brought it to San Diego, registered it in California, and got it back on the road. The gas tank was replaced along with a new Delco fuel pump. The fuel and brake systems where completely flushed, and the engine was pre-lubricated before starting. New BFG 245/50/16, G-Force Comp T/A tires, battery, and a new catalytic converter was installed.
The car runs, drives and handles excellent. No modifications. A/C blows cold, all gauges work, original radio works. Convertible top is original, and still in great shape. The paint is original and still shines. The upholstery and carpet are in great condition and there are no cracks on the dash.
Paint and Body
The chassis and body are bone dry and rust-free. Please see chassis photos (clean bare steel with no undercoating). No accidents, super strait, and very few door dings. The factory black paint still shines, and is original with the exception of the right front fender. It was scratched in a minor parking lot encounter decades ago and repainted at the owner's expense. The tops of the front and back plastic bumpers are faded. The Camaro has small scratches and a dime-sized dent near top of passenger door. Front spoiler is excellent and the IROC stripes all look great. Hood shows some fading. Body seams and gaps are excellent. No curb rash on factory wheels. Car has always been garaged — and it shows.
Interior
Beachwood tan leather and cloth interior looks fantastic. Carpet is in great condition. No cracks on dash, door panels look good, all gauges work, AC blows nice and cold, original radio works, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake handle are still in great condition and show minimal wear. Power windows and locks work. Weather stripping looks great. I believe the convertible top is original to the car and is still in good condition (shows some wear on passenger side, see photo). The top is manual, not power.
Mechanical
305 Tune Port Injected engine runs strong, and smooth with good oil pressure. There are no after-market modifications, and no rattle-can detailing. 700R4 automatic transmission shifts perfectly. Brakes are in great condition, and so is the cooling system. Suspension is tight and it handles great (special IROC suspension). Tires and battery are less than a year old.
Other
Gas struts that hold trunk lid open are tired, but the hood struts are new. Heater core was bypassed because it was leaking, and the horn does not work. Car is currently registered and title is in my name. A new CA smog certificate will be provided for CA buyers. The original radio works, but I don't know about the tape player. Speakers are not so good.
Only 3,750 IROC Convertibles were built in 1988. Coupled with this car's condition, options and history, it makes for a solid investment.
