The last time I saw and drove a 409/409 this nice and this original
was January 6th, 1962 when I picked up my Brand New black 409/409/4/speed ImpalaSS hardtop at JimRathmannChevrolet, 3300 North Dixie Hwy in Melbourne, FL
The story on this most amazing 409/409 Convertible starts back in 1962 in Honolulu,Hawaii.
Donald McKinley and his wife Jeanne had long wanted to have their very own Chevy ImpalaSS Convertible and when in April of 1962 they heard the Beach Boys new song "409" they went into
Aloha Chevrolet and ordered a 409/409hp ImpalaSSConvertible in Coronna Cream with Anniversary Gold Bucket seats.
Chevrolet had been running some full page ads in major magazines like LIFE and LOOK Magazine
in this color combination...and that is just what they ordered. Coronna Cream with Anniversary Gold Bucket seats
and matching convertible top.
There was a huge demand for the 409cid V-8 rated at 409hp with the dual quads/4/Speed transmission
and Chevy wasmost eager to get them into the hands of those who would be taking them to the Drag Strips on Sunday...Chevy knew that "Win on Sunday" translated into "Selling cars on Monday" was really a reality.
The engines were in short supply and as a result the lighter weight cars like theBel Air, Delrayand Biscayne bodies
received this engine combination ahead of the much heavier Convertible models.
The McKinley's waited.....and waited.......and waited some more. The fact that Aloha Chevrolet was 1000's of
miles from the West Coast of the United States didn't help matters.....but finally their long awaited Convertible
was produced and after Christmas in 1962 was finally destined to be loaded on a ship and transported to Honolulu.
We are fortunate to have the Factory/Dealer ORIGINAL 1962 Chevrolet Owner Protection Plan book which shows
that Aloha Motors (a division of Murphy's Motors, LTD) delivered the McKinley's car to them on January 29th, 1963.
Heck...it was about time they got their car...the 63 models had been out for a few months)
The same owner's protection plan book (warranty book) shows that the McKinley's returned on 4-14-1964 with
1168 miles to have Aloha Motors do the 1000 mile maintenance and to change the oil, filter and to have the
chassis lubricated. The original sleeve that held the owner's manual and warranty book is included.
Their next visit to Aloha was on 6-03-1965 with 2162 miles to have the 2000 mile maintenance done.
The 3000 mile maintenance was performed by Aloha Chevrolet on 3-31-1966 with 3014 miles.
The 4000 & 5000 mile maintenance were not done at Aloha but at 6,791 miles they returned to
Aloha Chevrolet to have the 6000 mile maintenance done on 2-26-1969.
The 8000 mile maintenance was done on the same date a year later with 8030 miles on 2-26-1970 by Aloha Chevrolet.
The 10,000 mile maintenance was performed by Aloha Chevrolet on 1-06-1972 with 10,141 miles and
on 1-06-1975 Aloha did the 12,000 mile maintenance with 12,276 miles recorded on the Service work order.
The 13,000 mile maintenance was done on 2-07-1979 with 14,238 recorded by Aloha Chevrolet and later in that
same year Aloha did the 14,000 mile service with 14, 413 miles recorded on 8-07-1979.
On 2-08-1980 with 14,748 miles Jeanne had the Oil & filter changed at Aloha for $4.42
With 14,784 miles on 8-20-1980 Jeanne had a safety check & other work was done at Aloha Chevy for $53.32.
On 2-19-1981 with 14,802 miles Jeanne had the Oil & filter changed for $4.42. The car had hardly been driven in 1981
with just under 20 miles during the past year.
The next day on 2-20,1981 Hawaii inspected this car and certified it had 14,802 miles.
On 8-05, 1981 with 14,814 miles Don had Aloha Chevy inspect their car and wrote Aloha a check for $4.94.
The Hawaii inspection certified this car had 14,814 miles.
This is The Real Deal!
IMPORTANT...Every invoice for work done at Aloha Chevrolet is an ORIGINAL copy
and has the date and mileage recorded and the car's license plate number.

1962 Chevrolet Impala Documentation
The time was approaching when Don & Jeanne had sadly decided to perhaps seek a new owner for their
beloved 1962 ImpalaSS409 Convertible.
The week before Christmas, Jeanne placed an ad in the Honolulu newspaper which read as follows
in the section "CLASSIC AND ANTIQUE CARS" and scheduled the ad to run for 7 days. (12-18 thru 12-25)
December 25th, 1981.....
'62 Chevrolet Impala V8, std. shift, Yellow convertible.$5,000, MI 15,000
Original equip. Ph 595-3701.
(see photo)
One of the most incredible thing's about this car, and there are many,
is that included with this car is the advertisement to sell this car from
the Honolulu Newspaper. It is the entire classified ad section, and
although it is slightly "yellowed" from age, it is perfectly readable,
intact and is not torn or ripped.
The day this ad broke in the Honolulu newspaper, GeorgeCambriawho was living in Honolulu
Hawaii called his pal Dale Armstrong inTorrence, California and told Dale, "I think I have found
the car you have been searching for, your "Dream" 1962 Chevy ImpalaSSConvertible with
15,000 miles and it's being advertised in today's paper for $5000. Dale said two words..."Buy It"
The next day, with 14,957.4 miles on December 19th,1981 Jeanne McKinley sold to GeorgeCambria,Dale
Armstrong's greatly desired 1962 Chevrolet ImpalaSS409 convertible for the sum of $4750.00.
The State ofHawaii issued an interim Certificate of Accuracy and certified the mileage at 14,957.4 actual miles.(see photo)
You simply can't get better mileage documentation than this!
Grateful for his help, Dale sent George $5000 for his help in getting him the car he had wanted for many, many years.
On December 23rd, 1981 Dale's Chevy was was driven to Matson Shipping by George and records show
it was received for shipment to the Port in Los Angels with 14,964 miles.(see photo)
And so, on the 29th of December, Matson Navigation Company, left the Port of Honolulu on their
vessel, theManukai(voyage 284) with one incredible 1962 Chevrolet ImpalaSS409/409 Convertible on board.
(shipment invoice 813926)
On the 5th of January,1982 this incredible car arrived back in the Port of Los Angeles with just under 15,000
actual miles...almost 20 years later.
This car had never spent a single night outdoors in the elements and it's new owner, Dale Armstrong
continued to give this rare car the same type of loving care...except Dale drove it much less than the
McKinley's had....probably because he was so busy with the sport he loved so much....racing.From his time
of acquisition in early 1982 until his passing away on November 28th, 2014, this car was barely driven
1000 miles.
In the auction, are photos of most of Dale's California registrations, which indicate that the car was driven
verysparinglyuntil 2008 which was the last year Dale renewed the car's registration and license plate's. Dale's
front & rear California plates will be included with the sale of this car along with the most amazing
set of documents & receipts I have ever seen on a vintage car...car collecting has been my passion and love for
the past 56 years....this Chevy is the BEST OF THE BEST!
Among the paperwork & Documentation will be:
A few of Dale's accomplishments...and their were so many...
Inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1995
Inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2008
Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in America in 2010
Number 10 on the list of the top driver's in the NHRA's 1st 50 Seasons
11 time member of the Old Car Craft Magazine All-Star Team
Crew Chief of Kenny Bernstein's Budweiser Fuel Dragster which
was the 1st to break the 300mph 1/4 mile record in 1992.
A tribute to Dale Armstrong.
NHRA great Dale Armstrong dies at 73
November 28, 2014
NHRA great Dale Armstrong died Friday at the age of 73,Photo by NHRA
Long-time crew chief for Kenny Bernstein was also a star NHRA driver, innovator
Dale Armstrong, whose talents as a driver, tuner, fabricator and innovator rivaled those of drag racing legend “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, died Thursday at his home in Temecula, California, with his wife, Susie, and their menagerie of rescued dogs and cats by his side. He was 73.
Although he was best known as crew chief to Kenny Bernstein when the Texan won five of his six NHRA championships, Armstrong was much, much more. In fact, he already had completed one successful career before he and Bernstein joined forces in 1982.
Born in Holden, Alberta, Canada, Armstrong developed his mechanical skills modifying hot rods in his family’s garage. He started racing in 1957 and, in 1965, moved to Southern California because it provided him an opportunity to race his Chevy II up to five days a week.
His driving career took off in the mid-1970s with the debut of the NHRA’s Pro Comp category in which Fuel Altereds, Funny Cars and Dragsters raced against one another in a heads-up format.
Armstrong won NHRA Pro Comp events in four distinctly different vehicles – a BB/Funny Car, an A/Fuel Dragster, a AA/Fuel Altered and a Top Alcohol Dragster which, at the time, was designated AA/DA. It was from that “AA” designation that Armstrong’s “Double-A Dale” nickname was derived.
Not surprisingly, Armstrong excelled in the sport’s biggest race, the Labor Day U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis, in which he won Pro Comp in 1974 (in an altered), 1975 (in Jim Foust’s “Alcoholic” Funny Car) and 1977 (in a Top Alcohol Dragster). He followed up his 1975 NHRA World Championship by winning seven of nine IHRA tour events and that organization’s Pro Comp title a year later.
After moving up to the nitro Funny Car class and despite racing on a tight budget, Armstrong went to three final rounds and, in his final appearance as a driver (Oct. 18, 1981), lowered the NHRA national record to 5.89 seconds after qualifying No. 1 for the season-ending Winston World Finals in Irvine, Calif.
As Bernstein’s crew chief, he won four straight NHRA Funny Car titles (1985-1988) before adding a Top Fuel championship in 1996. Nevertheless, his biggest career moment came on March 20, 1992 at Gainesville, Fla., where Bernstein became the first driver in history to break the 300 mile per hour barrier.
After leaving Bernstein’s Budweiser King team, Armstrong was crew chief to Larry Dixon at Don Prudhomme Racing, Inc., and, while there, directed the three-time world champion to the first sub-4.50 time in the history of quarter mile racing.
Inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1995, the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2010, he was No. 10 on the list of the top drivers in NHRA’s first 50 seasons and was an 11-time member of the old Car Craft Magazine All-Star Team.
Despite his driving and tuning prowess, Armstrong’s genius lay in his innovative skills. With Tony and Lanny Miglizzi of L&T clutches, he developed the first multi-stage clutch. With Ron Armstrong (no relation), he refined data acquisition with their work on the RacePak computer which became the standard for the sport.
He was among the first to utilize the wind tunnel for straight line applications and his race car designs were legend. The most controversial of his configurations was Bernstein’s “Batmobile” Buick Reatta Funny Car that broke all the barriers in 1987, leading to a plethora of NHRA rules changes.
Nevertheless, some of his most creative projects were snuffed out before they were even tested, mostly because of expense. Among them was a two-speed supercharger and a three-plugs-per-cylinder head design.
After leaving the sport, Armstrong remained active as a consultant, most recently to John Force Racing, Inc., although his principal interest was in restoring classic vehicles and race cars.
In late 1981 thanks to his friend George Cambra who lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, Dalepurchased his all time favorite classic convertible, a 1962 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible in Corona cream with Anniversary gold interior.George had seen the car advertised in the Honolulu newspaper
just before Christmas (1981)for $5000. The Chevy wasadvertised as havingless than 15,000documented miles andDale acted immediately.
By early January,1982,Dale's Impala SS Convertible was delivered to theLos Angeles port.
Original and in near perfect condition with less than 15,000 miles, this factory 409/409 4/speed ragtop Chevyhad never seen a drag strip and still had it's original factory power train. Over the next 32 years Daledrove his "baby" just a little over 1000 miles....meticulously maintaining the car in 100%factory stock condition.
The attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship that had made him a racing champion also made him one of the nation’s top restoration professionals. In fact, he had several projects in development when he lost his battle with complications from sarcoidosis.
If he hadn’t been a drag racer, Armstrong told his wife he might’ve played steel guitar in a country music band, a dream that now will go unfulfilled. However, one can only imagine what the steel guitar might have become in the hands of “Double-A Dale.”
Armstrong is survived by his wife, Susan Arnold, herself an award-winning public relations professional, Daughter Tracy Walsh, Son Brad Armstrong, Grandchildren Conor Walsh, Morgan Walsh, Peyton Armstrong, Dale Armstrong and Sady Keenum, Great Granddaughter Tinleigh Keenum and his Sister, Phyllis Fabian.
There is no question that this is the LOWEST mileage 1962 Chevrolet
Impala 409/409hp/4/Speed Convertible known to exist.
There is no doubt or question that this car still retains all of it's original power train.
When you actually get to drive this car, you will understand what it means when
collectors say, "Nothing drives like an Original low mileage car"
There are two things you can't buy...."ORIGINALITY& MILEAGE" and this gorgeous Impala SS
convertible has both....and all the paperwork to prove it.
This is NOT the MOST expensive Impala SS 409/409 Convertible being offered on the
market today (but it should be)....it is the most collectible and most beautiful one being offered for purchase
