This 2001 Chevrolet Camaro SS is a great example of shared DNA improving the breed. With a Corvette-based LS1 V8 making a grossly under-rated 325 horsepower it's insanely fast, and thanks to full documentation, three-owner history, and just 41,494 original miles, it's a great candidate for biggest bang for the buck in our showroom.
The SS package was developed by SLP but brought in-house by Chevrolet, making this the unquestioned top-of-the-line factory Camaro. Adding more than $10,000 to the F-body's base price, the SS was an expensive piece of muscle, but the guys who know these cars know that they're a heck of a lot faster than they should be. Properly maintained and freshened with a paint job along the way, this one presents in fantastic condition in every way and offers a known ownership history and almost zero modifications, meaning it's led a very easy life. It shows just 41,494 authentic miles, and its overall condition suggests it's been protected every day of its life. The beautiful pewter paint is subtle but with the gaping ram air hood and prominent SS badges, well, let's just say it's walking softly and carrying a big stick. The body kit gives the Camaro a lower, longer look and while there might be a few signs of use here and there, they're hardly noticeable without a diligent search. If you like the way these cars look, few are as impressive as this one.
The black leather interior was part of the top-of-the-line package, offering comfort and performance without compromising either. The heavily bolstered leather seats look quite good, showing only very minimal use, and the rear seat doesn't look like it's ever been used. There's a full array of gauges in an easy-to-read instrument panel and everything was standard on the SS, from power windows, seats, and locks to A/C to cruise control, and as you'd expect, it all works. A powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system handles the entertainment that the engine can't (yeah, right), and this one has a 6-speed manual, which makes it an absolute blast to drive! T-tops are always a welcome addition, offering open-air motoring with the security of a hardtop and with fold-down rear seats and a decent-sized trunk, the Camaro is reasonably practical as a real car, too.
The LS1 under the hood was originally rated at 325 horsepower, which was already under-stated by the factory just to keep the Corvette on top, but inside it was identical to the C5's LS1 motor. This one is completely stock, and since it's an SS, the ram air hood, rumbling exhaust, and upgraded suspension were all part of the package. The engine compartment was never designed to be beautiful, but it's very clean and well-maintained, so someone ensured that it was in top mechanical condition throughout its life. Experts will note the air cleaner lid isn't correct for a 2001 model, but it looks great and most folks won't know the difference. The 6-speed manual transmission snaps through the gears and feeds 3.42 gears on a factory-installed Auburn posi. The suspension is still impressively capable even today, thanks to Bilstein shocks and progressive-rate springs. Cool 17-inch Hurst wheels are a nod to the past and wear fat 275/40/17 Bridgestone radials that are probably only the second or third set of tires this car has ever worn.
This is a well-kept, unmolested, unabused F-body that's in 100% functional condition. Cars like this are getting rarer every day. Call today!
