1971 Dodge Challenger Description

Hello Mopar fans. Up for bids is a very nice 1971 Dodge Challenger. I have owned the car for over 15 years and put my heart and soul into the car, making it the fastest, most reliable and best looking car that I could. I have added some personal touches along the way in the spirit of a true American Hot rodder. I started with a solid, running 318 car and went from there. The engine is now a 1971 dated 340 block bored .030 and fitted with Diamond Pistons, Eagle I-Beam rods and 4.0 stroke crank for a 416 cubic inch displacement. Final compression ratio was carefully limited to 10.2 to 1 so I would be able to run safety and fast on California 91 octane Supreme fuel. The crankshaft is held in place with Pro Gram main caps line bored to size. The oil galleys have been drilled oversize for improved oiling. 10 quart Armando's Road Race oil pan with built in windage tray, crank scraper, baffles and trap doors. Melling HV/HP oil pump. Lunati hydraulic roller camshaft with .650 lift. (With a 1.6 rocker arm ratio) Smith Brothers pushrods, Hughes 1.6 ratio adjustable roller rocker arms. MP cast aluminum valve covers. Cloyes 3 position double roller timing chain with MP chain tensioner. Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads with Stage 3 porting from Hensley Performance. 1 5/8" TTI headers modified for improved ground clearance using Firecone collectors. 2 1/2" pipes with crossover, "Coffin" brand mufflers (Visalia CA), full tailpipes and TTI exhaust tips at rear valance. Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, Holley 770 CFM VS Street Avenger 4 barrel with ram air-cold air dual snorkle air cleaner assembly. Quick fuel pressure regulator with bypass back to tank. Electric "Walbro" brand fuel pump (Rated to 700 HP) in tank, protected by a relay system. 3/8" fuel line from tank to carburetor. MSD ignition, distributor and Blaster 2 coil. 10 mm spark plug wires. Toyota 70 amp alternator with internal regulator. Police HD water pump. I also used Poly-Lock motor mounts.
I converted the car to a manual transmission. I used an American Powertrain RS600 series 5 speed with an aluminum flywheel, ceramic clutch and a hydraulic clutch system . The transmission shifts great and never binds or grinds between gears. The gear spacing is great for all types of driving. I had a 3rd member rebuilt for the rear axle and had new 3.91 gears installed with a new Track-Lock differential and new bearings. I kept the stock style tapered Timken axle bearings for road race durability.
Because I wanted a car that could handle well, I rebuilt the front suspension with all new parts. The bushings are rubber for comfort but I did install new MP .96 torsion bars, a 1.25 front sway bar and KYB shocks. I welded the K member and added gussets to reinforce the steering box mounts and boxed the bottoms of the lower control arms. MP subframe connectors. I used Magnum Force 2 inch drop spindles and Magnum Force double adjustable upper control arms for the added adjustability and improved camber/caster alignment settings. The rear has new leafs from "springs and things" and KYB shocks. The manual steering box was rebuilt by Firm Feel, I also installed Fast Ratio idler and pitman arms. The car handles far better than a stock Challenger while still delivering a decent ride. I installed a Dr Diff 13" front brake kit using slotted rotors and 4 piston aluminum calipers. Rear brakes are 10 x 2 1/4" drums. Wilwood 7/8" manual master cylinder with an inline adjustable proportioning valve. The brake pedal is firm and the brakes work quite well.
The wheels are 17" Center lines, 17x8 up front and 17x9.5 in the rear with Nitto NTo1 tires.
The body is straight and the panel gaps are consistent.Solid, clean floors, frame rails and trunk floor.NOrust. Additional pictures are available on request. The hood is fiberglass with "Quick Latch" locks. The animal print is a vinyl wrap. A prop rod is located underhood to provide support. Paint is PPG urethane single stage black. Tinted glass with new windshield. H1 headlights with 100w Xenon bulbs ran through relays. 60w amber fog lamps in lower valance.
NEW dash with 3 speaker layout. Bucket seats have new foam buns and cloth/vinyl upholstery. Rear seat has original foam in good condition with matching upholstery. Entire floor was covered with Dynamat sound deadener. Additional sound deadener is on roof under headliner. The gauges were restored by Redline in Southern CA. The ammeter was converted to a Voltmeter. Autometer tachometer, AEM Air/Fuel meter. All gauges work, all lights and turn signals work too.
This Challenger is a solid car and a great performer. It will put smiles on your face and a thrill in your heart. It is not a trailer queen, this car is for an enthusiast that likes todrivetheir cars.
