This is sequentially the 22nd of only 100 North American Market "Vetroresina" (Italian for Glass Reinforced Plastic/GRP) 308 GTB models produced. It is one of just six ordered and sold new for the Canadian market and one of only 712 total Fiberglass 308 GTBs ever completed.
Production began in September of 1975 and ended in December of 1977. Beginning in June of 1976, Ferrari began to introduce steel-bodied 308s along-side their plastic-bodied counterparts. Production remained over-lapping until December of 1976 when the fiberglass variant began to be phased out. The two distinct versions remained in production until as noted in December of 1977 when the last "Vetroresina" example was completed.
The North American Market 308 GTB Vetroresina models differed from the European production examples in several ways. A dual distributor, dual exhaust system engine replaced the single distributor, single exhaust system engine found on the European version. The engine also relied on a more traditional and simpler "wet-sump" oiling system with revised oil-cooler arrangement. The North American variant also utilized revised side-marker and taillight lenses as well as having a speedometer in miles per hour and labeling and badging compliant with DOT and EPA regulations on those sold in the States.
Chassis No. 19505 was as noted earlier ordered and sold new to a Canadian client. 19505 was completed in June of 1976 and sold on October 25th, 1976 to Jean Robidoux or Sherbrooke, Quebec via Luigi Sports Cars of Montreal, Canada and therefore had a speedometer that was calibrated in kilometers per hour as well as an odometer showing kilometers rather than miles.
In 2000 this Ferrari was offered for sale in sound, original and unrestored condition. It was purchased by the owners of Segal Motorcar Company in Concord, Ontario, Canada. It was then given a two year complete and total body-off restoration by Master Ferrari Craftsmen, Frank DiPonzio who has more than 40 years experience with Ferraris. Upon completion of the mechanical and cosmetic rebuild, the car was delivered to Tony Macri for a complete restoration of the interior to day one, as delivered configuration.
In January of 2015, full fresh major services and safety checks were completed by Massimo Conti, former F1 mechanic to world champion Ferrari Team Driver Michael Schumacher. This work was extremely comprehensive and included the rebuilding of the brakes and new timing belts. New correct Michelin XWX tires were also fitted and remain on the car today.
This very rare, matching numbers, rust and accident free Ferrari is sold complete with full documentation and history from new including all original invoices, books, records, tools, jack kit, pouch, manuals and two sets of original keys. It is largely regarded as the single finest, fully restored 308 GTB Vetroresina to ever come up for sale.
