Offered for your consideration is this incredible 1986 Ferrari Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet. In the loving care of Los Angeles-based TV and movie music composer Mike Post for over 20 years, we recently acquired the car from Mike through a Southern California colleague of many years after previously handling another Post car with him.
A quick note for those not in the know - the Mondial 3.2 debuted in 1986 with the same powertrain as the then-new 328 GTB and GTS and this is the one and only year for a Mondial with the 3.2 V8 and without the troublesome ATE Mark II ABS system. This makes the 1986 Mondial the year to own for it is the best of both worlds for those reasons alone. We certainly think so as it's our favorite practical V8 Ferrari and one that's relatively easy and cost-effective to own relative to most. We sell and service a number of Mondials every year and make them better every single time; if this was not such a stunningly low-miles collector grade example, I'd likely have put a good 1,000 miles on it prior to offering it for sale as I usually do!
On arrival, it was clear that Mike's Mondial 3.2 hadn't seen much use since its most recent service in 2011. We found a number of issues that concerned us and have spent the last two months servicing and repairing the car to bring it up to our standards. The cam belt service, while performed a few hundred miles prior, was now out of date and was redone by us in our shop along with a new water pump and the fuel system was fouled, with a bad accumulator, clogged filter and several vacuum leaks that kept the car from being driveable as this thoroughbred should be. While we were in there, we found that the original air conditioning compressor leaked and replaced this with a new correct Sanden unit and rebuilt the hot water valve so that the climate control did not mix heat. I've now put nearly 200 fun miles on the car to shake it down and it's excellent!
On his acquisition in the 1990s, Mike saw no need for the convertible top in Southern California and thus removed it and had a small boot cover made to cover the opening. The original convertible top was unceremoniously relegated to a corner in his garage, where something munched on it and it shrunk. After refitting this top, we knew it wasn't worthy of the car and so we bought a new top and expertly fitted it to the original top bows, finding in the process that we had to rebuild both top latches as they were loose and bordering on being broken.
Mike also debadged the car quite a bit - all wheel and steering wheel centers as well as the "MONDIAL 3.2" badge were gone when the car arrived with us. We replaced all of the missing Cavallini Rampante but not the rear badge as they are difficult to come by in as good shape as this car and it looks cleaner without it.
We had to acquire another tan top boot as Mike misplaced the original, since taking these photos we replaced the Tenax fasteners where needed on delivery and fixed two corners that were lightly torn at these fasteners. Sorry that this was not done in these photos - we honestly did not lower the new top and try to fit the boot until it was photo time!
Though the car has been repainted and the top redone, the interior is original and in excellent, supple condition throughout. No leather or carpet has been redyed anywhere and though a few flaws exist throughout, we did nothing other than condition the hides and clean the carpets. Time has been very good to this car's interior.
The all-important factory owner's manual pouch remains in the passenger door pocket. The car was sold new by Symbolic Ferrari in La Jolla and found its way two hours north to Los Angeles when it entered Mike's collection. The owner's manual and service book along with some other paperwork are complete and intact.
The contents of the manual pouch - very complete!
As mentioned, the carpets are likewise original and excellent throughout. The dash is crack-free as well.
All the stitching is visible, indicative of the seats never having been redyed.
There's a surprising amount of rear legroom in a Mondial and a lot of room to get in and out.
The rear seats are likewise in great condition as one would expect. Our camera decided to wash out the color of many of these interior shots, nothing here is in any way faded or discolored.
The luggage straps appear unused on the rear seat backs as seen here.
As seen from the driver's side.
Even the seat backs are wrapped in fine Italian leather, there's no vinyl here!
Nor is the dash or console - all beautiful hides.
Mileage as of the photos, I have put another 150 or so on the car easily since this time to continue to make sure it's everything that it's supposed to be.
The driver's seat has only minor entry wear along the outer edge - since there's never been any dye work here we didn't do any, either.
The console and switch panel are in lovely condition, commensurate with the rest of the interior. All switches work great though the climate control temperature dial needs a wiggle now and then and will likely clear up with use.
A 1986-vintage Sony AM/FM/Cassette deck remained in the console until I changed it out for an Eclipse CD head unit I had around last week as the Sony did not work reliably.
The driver door panel exhibits no wear either. We put a new power mirror switch in as the old one did not work properly.
The inside of the new top is as you would expect, both latches have been rebuilt and work as they should.
Overall, the interior is lovely and a nice place to be, the leather is soft and supple, the seats supportive and comfortable in a way few Mondials are.
The inside of the front trunk is tidy, the fuse and relay panel cover is not broken as most are and all connections are clean and secure. We know the problem areas with these and have inspected them to our satisfaction. Many 308s, 328s and Mondials have very dodgy wiring, fuse panel and relay printed circuits, connectors and components (sometimes with issues from the factory which we are the first ones to correct) and this is not one of them.
We replced the receiver dryer, but the cadmium plating on the hose connections is original, most of the 'cad and color' plating throughout the car is beautiful and bright.
The original radiator appears never to have been out of the car and has all of its original markings.
The original brake and clitch master cylinders are nice and clean with fresh fluid changes.
The car is incredibly straight down both sides, there is no accident history or any indication of same anywhere.
All lids open! Let's take a look in the rear trunk compartment.
The top boot folded up and the large tools rolled up properly. The small tools did not come with the car and while they're looking for them in Mike's studio, it's unlikely that they will turn up. We can get you a fresh reproduction set for about $350 if you'd like one - this kit is better than the original.
The wheels are all near mint throughout with new center caps as mentioned previously. The expensive Michelin TRXes are almost brand new with no flat spots or any other signs of dry rot cracking or other deterioration. When they wear out or age out, we recommend a set of 16"s from Superperformance in the UK - these appear factory authentic and allow for a much wider choice in performance rubber.
Apart from the valve cover gaskets, cam seals, plugs and wires which were all new during the 2011 service just a few hundred miles ago, we did a comprehensive full service as mentioned previously. The plenum was off to chase down multiple vacuum leaks as well as a small water leak and a thermostat change, so we refinished it in the correct red as we do for all of our Ferrari service customers. The engine starts up and idles correctly cold and warm with no hesitation or other incorrect behavior from the KE-Jetronic fuel injection system. ALL fluids and filters were of course changed with correct stuff.
All lid struts are also correct and working properly as pictured earlier.
The new top was a 2-day job. The material is absolutely correct against the original that we fitted and then later discarded. Small wrinkles and tucks are smoothing out more and more with use and time out in the sun as is common with a new top.
Overall, it's a stunning job that came out as well as any and should provide many years of service.
NOW - in the interests of full disclosure - you've seen how lovely this car is throughout in the above shots as well as the ones to come - and we have no reason to think that it hasn't always been a pampered example. However, this Mondial 3.2 left the factory in "Miami Vice Bianco" - that's right, this car was born white. Whether it was done when the car was new as it was just unsaleable or when it was just a few years old, the recolor to Rosso Rubino Metallizato was obviously done to an extraordinary standard, glass and trim out, bumpers and headlights off et.c. We suspect that it was a very expensive proposition carried out by Symbolic or another Ferrari expert, since Mike Post and our colleague who has also been involved with this car intimately for many years were all unaware of the change during Mike's entire ownership as well as when the car transferred to us. We only discovered the white in a few small areas that they missed as well as in the engine compartment where the original black had chipped away. This should in no way dampen your interest in the car... so continue on with me....
More of the new top and all the factory original glass up and tight.
The little weatherseal strip between the two windows is missing about 1.5" towards the bottom - we could not find a suitable replacement - this in no way affects operation of the windows - the rears commonly do not even work on these cars and none of the windows had been raised on this car in a very long time due to Mike's configuration as a Roadster, so we greased and serviced all mechanisms as needed. The rears need a little manual assistance going up, but work fine.
Needless to say, all lights and indicators work as they should; all lenses are crack and fade free.
There's a reflection of the lake in the right front reflector here, it is not damaged.
As mentioned earlier, all the glass is believed to be original in this car and beautiful throughout.
The underside of the car is clean and has not been detailed in any way apart from getting a thorough cleaning in our shop prior to us working on it.
The pan was resealed at some point apparently, the gasket appears new.
New fuel accumulator and filter seen here.
New Sanden AC compressor and a side view of the new Bosch fuel filter.
Up front, the front suspension and cooling tubes. The drain hoses to the left of the radiator pipes are for the evaporator casing and the air intake grill area.
The front suspension is unmodified, original factory paint markings on the tie rods, original Konis et.c.
The underpan is part of the structural rigidity of the Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet, there's no road rash here.
The front spoiler hasn't hit anything hard, either.
The VIN tag inside the front door on the B pillar is missing two rivets, as though they started to take it off for the repaint and then stopped, as it's got a little overspray on the edge. We don't know why this is, but it is secure.
The VIN stamp in the engine compartment matches the tag, so it's obviously original to the car.
Serviced, detailed and fettled, this Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet is ready for your stable...
We know that Mike did not buy this car new, so it's not a one-owner as Autocheck says, but we thought you'd like to see this anyway to help document the car's past.
payment/shippingThis car is being sold by a licensed and bonded dealer of fine used automobiles located in Augusta (where the car is located) and Savannah, Georgia. Please understand that this is an unusual 30 year old vintage car hand-built by men and not gods - and is thus sold as-is, where-is with no implied or stated warranty or guarantee; please be realistic about your expectations (i.e., if you expect it to be a late model Ferrari, buy one of those instead - but it must be said that we prefer the 80s V-8 Ferrari for a wonderful driving experience). As stated above in the listing, we have made a significant effort over the last two months to correct issues that we found with the car - and with said effort now believe it to be in extremely good health based on many years of experience with other sports, classic and unusual cars of all types over many years.
Full payment is due within seven days of auction close unless discussed with us in advance of your bid. Your winning bid is a contract to buy, not just to look or for first right of refusal; the only reason your contract would be null and void is if it was found that we willfully and with malice aforethought misrepresented the car in the above description. If you feel you need to inspect the car prior to purchase, please arrange and have this inspection done prior to placing a successful bid, we welcome your visit.
Accepted forms of payment include a cleared certified cheque or wire transfer in the dealership's bank account, or cash in person on pickup (no cash via the mail, eBay!). We require that paperwork be completed prior to or at the time of pickup (should you do this in person) or filed back with us if done remotely prior to the car leaving, we typically FedEx paperwork out to you immediately on receiving payment so this is a quick process. The car will be sold on a clear California title and ought to be no problem smogging in CA as it has passed smog in the past and was sold new in CA. We will require a copy of your driver's license to process paperwork. We do not charge any tax to out of state buyers as this is something you handle at the DMV or, naturally, other dealers in all 50 states.
Shipping or pickup must occur within fourteen days of auction close unless discussed with us in advance of your bid. We are happy to refer you to one of the high-quality open or enclosed collector car shipping companies that we use frequently in the normal course of business - and we cannot stress enough the importance of using such a carrier and not a random transport broker or carrier you might find online, particularly as this is a unique vintage car in phenomenal condition. For international buyers, we can carry the car to the port of Savannah at no charge or to other ports for a nominal fee, though shipping beyond the U.S. border must be entirely arranged for and paid by you. Please contact us if you need any assistance with logistics and we'll be happy to help. Meanwhile, the car is safe and secure in our Savannah, GA location.
We reserve the right to cancel all bids and end the auction early at any time during the course of the sale should a sale occur outside of eBay as the car has been offered quietly through other channels over the past couple of weeks. We typically do not do this at all and only when full payment has been received from such a buyer will the auction be pulled.
Any legal action associated with this sale from either the buyer or the seller is to take place in the State of Georgia in the Chatham County Courthouse. The bidder/buyer further agrees that any legal action will be heard in Chatham County in the State of Georgia. All legal actions associated with this auction/sale will be governed by the laws of the State of Georgia and buyer agrees to be responsible for all legal costs including, but not limited to, court costs, expenses, attorney fees, cost of process service, and all other costs associated with the normal course of business.
