1985 Ford Mustang Description

This car has 32,204 original miles and incredibly clean inside and out. Below is a list of what’s not original on the car. If it’s not listed there, and I haven’t just forgotten about it, it is as installed from the factory or a replacement service part.

I am the 3rd owner and the 2nd registered owner. The original owner ordered the car in 1984 and took delivery in early 1985. He added a Paxton supercharger in 1986 along with an Offenhouser intake and 750cfm Holley carb. He also added the Ford Motortsport Extra Performance ignition.I have the original receipt for the Paxton from 1986 for $1,900.00, so it should be considered a “Day 2” type mod.

The second owner had the car for about 2 years and spent his time putting the original parts or replacement service parts back in the car to get it back to an original configuration. When I bought it, he had just about completed that process, so I have the complete Paxton kit along with the intake, carb, etc… stored and all of that will go with the car.I also have the original hood, original wheels with original Gatorback tires.

Car has ice cold R-12 AC, a recent heater core replacement, and it is ready to drive anywhere anytime. It runs at the proper temperature even with the AC on. I have run Amsoil in it since I have owned it. It has a factory sunroof and includes the sunroof storage bag. Car also comes with a custom fit car cover for indoor use.

The interior I would rate as 9.5 – 9.75 out of 10. The only visible issues I can see is are couple of spots here and there on the carpet. Otherwise, I can’t find a thing wrong with it. Looks practically new. Dash pad is perfect as well as the seats. No stains and no tears on seats front or rear. The car has never been smoked in.

The original paint I would rate at an 8 – 9 out of 10. There are a couple of spots that had some paint work done in 1985 that are noticeable. One is on the roof and one is on the right rear quarter panel. It has not ever been crashed, but I think they were paint defects that the dealer did a poor job of repairing. That is the information I have gotten from the original owner. There are a couple of small dings as well, but you have to look for them. No repaint work other that what’s listed here has been done to the car. All of the trim is factory gray and unpainted.

I have entered this in 5 shows including the Mustang Club of Greater Kansas City (twice) which judges using MCA criteria and the Mid America Ford Meet in Tulsa, OK 2014. 5 in class first place awards.

Changed from original:

Carburetor – I am currently running a Quick Fuel HR-600 carburetor. In prepping this car for a road trip back in 2013, I had a lot of trouble with the stock carb. I think it finally turned out to be the fuel pump, but I have not put the original carb back on. It has the secondary metering block installed on it, and all of the original pieces are included. It has a fresh rebuild, and should be able to be installed quickly to run. The original carb and another matching carb will be included, and all of the emission equipment is in place to reinstall the original carb. With the QF carb, it ran 201hp at the rear wheels when tuning on the dyno.

Fuel line from pump to carb – With the new carb, I installed a -6AN line between the pump and carb. A LMR repop steel line is included with the car. The original line is gone.

Fuel pump – The fuel pump went out on the road trip and was replaced with a Napa remain (Carter Hi-Flow). The original pump was not kept because I didn’t need the inside of the car smelling like gasoline for another 700 miles. I do have a NOS (or reman old stock more appropriately) Ford pump to go with it.

Hood – I bought a second hood to give the car the “Dominator” treatment. The new hood has been set up using dimensions from an original Dominator, and the paint match is spot on. The original hood is in great shape and is included with the car.

Air Cleaner Lid –I bought a used air cleaner lid to complete the Dominator treatment. The original lid is in nice shape and is included with the car.

Service Parts – Belts, hoses, radiator cap, AC lines & Receiver Dryer, Master Cylinder (factory Ford replacement), spark plug wires, etc… The bulk of these parts removed have been stored and will go with the car.

Springs – Currently running Ford Racing “B” springs. Factory springs included with the car. They do have some sag to them from sitting for all those years.

Shocks/Struts – KYB front and rear. Original struts included with sale. Original shocks were damaged during removal. They are available if desired.

Ignition Box – Still running the Motorsport box the original owner installed. The factory box is gone.

Speedometer – The original owner had the dealer install a 140mph speedometer around 6000 – 6500 miles. The story from the original owner (who I assume has no incentive to be other than truthful as I did not buy the car directly from him) is that the dealer ran the new speedo up to matching mileage before installation. The original speedo is included and shows the exact mileage it had when removed.

Rear Gear – The original owner said that there was either a recall or a TSB regarding the rear gears which were originally 2.73:1. When in for that repair, the dealer installed 3.08 to replace the 2.73 (I think dealers were a lot better to deal with back then, and the original owner had a friend that worked there). The speedo gear is correct. Original gears I assume are long gone.

Water Outlet – The original water outlet had a fair amount of corrosion which I’m assuming was due to sitting for several years. It was not leaking but looked like it could. I replaced it with a Ford Racing stock type replacement and installed a Motorcraft 192° thermostat.

Wheels/Tires – I have the original 10-hole wheels with the original Gatorback tires that will go with the car. The stock wheels have some clear coat peeling and could use a good refurbish before being used again. The current tires are BFG G Force Sport Comp 2 245/50ZR 16 and have approximately 4,500 miles on them. I added a set of steering rack spacers due to the large front tires hitting the edge of the mud flap at full lock.
