The 2-stage model year (1962-64) reached its peak in 1963 both for engines and body styles. The best was saved for mid-year introduction. All new were the Sports Hardtop (a 2-door hardtop with sloping rear pillar) and a replacement for the 406 HP engine—the 427 HP engine—with a dual quad Holley setup rated at 425 HP and 480 ft.-lbs. of torque.
New slogans: “Super Torque Fords” and “Total Performance”—These 427 fastbacks led Ford to 23 NASCAR victories.
The Thunderbird 427 ci High Performance V-8 came with some mandatory equipment including 4-speed transmission, heavy-duty suspension, heavy-duty battery, 7.10 x 15 in. four-ply nylon tires, large fade resistant brakes, and heftier driveline. Power steering, power brakes, AC were not available with the 427 option.
