This 2016 Ford Explorer Sport was purchased in July of 2015 and built by Cars by Kris for display in Ford Motor Company’s booth at the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV. It was built to display the customizability of the Explorer platform and we believe it is one of the finest and most exciting examples out there.
The entire car was professionally repainted in Axalta paints by LGE CTS Motorsports in San Dimas, CA, using Prowler Orange Metallic and Ford Black paint. All exterior surfaces have been repainted including the door jambs and under the hood. The exterior plastic pieces were refinished as well, with all of the lower body cladding being redone in carbon fiber. The Explorer also features custom-built fender flares, which widen the car about 2 inches per side. To fit these wider flares, Triumph Forged crafted a set of custom 3-piece, 24”x11” wheels which were designed specifically for this project. The wheels are wrapped in Toyo Proxes STII 295/30 tires. To slow the car down, a complete Wilwood big brake kit was installed. The front features 15” drilled and slotted rotors with 6-piston calipers and the rear brakes consist of 14.25” rotors with 4-piston calipers. These were installed using special brackets from TCE, made specifically for the Explorer/SHO/Flex platform. The front end has been lowered with H&R lowering springs and he rear has been dropped slightly using modified factory springs. The engine breathes through a K&N cold air intake system and sports custom ECM tuning by Leading Edge Tuning, which bumps the power to over 400bhp. The exhaust has a custom-built muffler delete from CGS Exhaust, but retains factory catalytic converters. I do have a set of brand new catless downpipes that may be included with the vehicle, but an updated ECM program will be required for the car to run properly with them.
The entire interior was redone by Alea Leather Specialist. The seats have been reupholstered with a custom design using smooth Nappa leather with perforated leather inserts. The console lids and door inserts have also been refinished by Alea and feature orange contrast stitching. Behind the rear hatch is a custom-built sound system, fabricated by master craftsman, Gary Bell of Define Concepts using CT Sounds audio equipment, including two amplifiers and a competition-grade 12” subwoofer.
The headlights have been modified with color-changing Diode Dynamics LED driving lights, which are controlled with a remote and can be turned just about any color imaginable or be left their original white. The factory tail lights have been lightly smoked and the Ford emblems have had their bezels painted black and have a brushed metal lettering. The exhaust bezels have also been brushed. The factory halogen foglight bulbs have been replaced with LEDs to match the headlights.
These modifications alone make for a very nice, enjoyable vehicle that turns heads everywhere it goes, but in addition to all of these custom touches, this Explorer has nearly every option available on the Sport model with the exception of the sunroof. Some of the options included in this Explorer are heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, rear bucket seats with a center console, navigation, power liftgate, front and rear cameras, front and rear parking sensors, adjustable terrain management, color changing ambient lighting, and much more. This is one of the finest Explorers on the market and will make a great daily driver or weekend cruiser.
In the interest of complete transparency, I’d like to also mention any imperfections. Cosmetically the car is 95% perfect, though there are some small chips on the roof rails. There is a minor spot of rash on the front passenger side wheel. Currently, with its lowered stance, there are some issues with the tires rubbing on the fender liners. While it makes some noise, there hasn't been any affect on overall drivability. If this is a concern for any interested parties, I would be happy to negotiate fixing any and all issues with the vehicle upon a deal being reached. As with every vehicle I have ever owned and sold, I want the next owner to be 100% happy with it and as proud to own it as I have been.
Also included in the sale is the 56Nord carbon fiber roof box. This was a pre-production prototype built for display at the SEMA Show, but we are working to make this a fully functioning box for the next owner.
I’m happy to answer any questions and provide additional pictures upon request!
