Equipped with a 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, this plug-in can go up to 22 miles on electricity only; any further and the combustion engines fire up and the car operates essentially the same as any other hybrid. Tech features include a touchscreen interface, BlueTooth, smart key system, heated seats and rain sensing wipers.
The Energi can be charged fully in two and a half hours using a 240-volt charger, or in seven hours using a standard 120-volt household outlet. It also supplements its electric range with regenerative braking. Between the front wheels lies the DOHC 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder that Ford rates at 141 horsepower, abetted by a 118-hp AC motor. Mash up the electric motor's output with that of the engine through the Energi's continuously variable transmission and you get a net 188 horsepower.
