" Jack Roush has been the head of Roush Industries, Inc. for over 40 years, but his passion for cars goes back much further than that. His passion for racing and vehicles began at a very early age – when he was born in Covington, Kentucky in 1942. Despite being born in Kentucky, Jack grew up in Manchester, Ohio. It was during his childhood in Ohio that Roush discovered his passion for figuring out how things worked – tinkering in his parent’s garage, using math to improve and build upon things, and tearing things apart to examine how they functioned. Roush showed exemplary mathematic skills throughout high school, so he continued his education at Berea College where he earned a mathematics degree. The year that he graduated, he moved to Detroit to work for Ford Motor Company and used his mathematical brain to improve and evolve the automotive industry.
A few years after working for Ford Motor Company, he left to pursue a newfound passion: racing. Despite winning national events and championships for a few years, he still believed in the importance of education and continued to learn. In 1970, he earned his masters in Scientific Mathematics from Eastern Michigan University.
In 1976, Roush formed Jack Roush Performance Engineering. With his academic background and his experience on the track, he built engines for various racing teams and saw great success. While he was still producing for the racing industry, he himself took a brief hiatus from the sport until the early 1980’s. In 1984, Jack returned to racing and went on to claim 23 national championships and titles in two series, with 119 races won. After accomplishing so much, he launched his first NASCAR Cup team with driver Mark Martin in 1988. Martin claimed the NASCAR Cup victory only a year later, and continued to prosper in the racing industry as time went on. Together, Martin and Roush continued became one of the most successful partnerships in NASCAR history.
It was in 1988 that Roush also presented Ford Motor Company with his first Roush Performance Mustang. This beautiful vehicle produced 400 horsepower from a twin-turbo engine but did not impress Ford enough for them to form a partnership with him. Roush continued to be persistent and improve upon his Roush vehicles. Sure enough, a few years down the road Ford Motor Company agreed to partner with Roush and began offering complete Roush packages in-house.
His success with this partnership gave him the opportunity to found ‘Roush Performance Products’ in 1995. This company was built on Roush's rich racing heritage and engineering capabilities - a combination which resulted in unmatched products in the automotive aftermarket.
Current day, Jack Roush (also known as ‘The Cat in the Hat’) continues to be involved in racing, having won 5 Driver Championships across NASCAR’s three premier series, won 299 races overall, and also raced more than 1 million miles in the NASCAR’s Sprint Cup series. In 2012, Roush Fenway celebrated 25 years in NASCAR by adding one more win to its victory list, making it an even 300 victories!
Jack Roush also employs more than 3,000 people in more than 50 facilities around the globe. He brings passion and drive to the racing industry, Roush, and the automobile industry as a whole. Jack Roush is not only a racing genius, or the head of Roush Industries – he’s a legend. With an unstoppable drive and determination to succeed, Roush has made huge strides in the automotive industry and will continue to do so for many years to come.
