Present Owner Information What we do know: This Mustang was obtained by the current owner in 1999, purchased in Jacksonville FL. At the time of purchase it was indicated to them that even though the Florida title reflected EXEMPT on mileage that the odometer had not turned over. If that information was correct that would mean the 9,024 miles showing presently on the odometer would be 109,024 miles. The history of this Mustang beyond the current ownership is not known. Since 1999 the owner has had it they only used regular motor oil, no synthetics. Predominantly the wife's car, she drove it a lot during the 18 years they've owned it, mostly all local driving as one would with any vehicle as a daily driver. (shipped to Michigan and back one time). It has been highly reliable; starts on the first crank, has lots of power, uses no oil, no smoke, exhaust is nice and clean. As the Best of Best title on this ad; this Mustang's considered to be that for a number of reasons we'll mention in this ad. As the Best of the Best as a driver; this Mustang being 50 years in age is nice and tight; no squeaks or rattles, smooth driving, accelerates with lots of get up and go power (exhaust burns clean), steers so easy with the power assisted steering. It has drum brakes (being not power brakes it is normal you apply a bit of pressure on the brake pedal), it brakes good. The owners are seniors and one of the things they most enjoyed as a hobby is attending classic car shows together; they took in a lot of car shows. Not to win trophy's, win shows, just enjoy the car sow fun and spirit of attending with other car buffs. When they purchased this Mustang there was already: GT wheel covers and a GT steering wheel on it. They added the present dash radio with the Mustang branded and Mustang Pony's. Equipment on it we believe is from different year Mustangs; 66', 67' & 68'. When they purchased, prior to their ownership somewhere in it's earlier history it was pink, couple discreet places you see a peek of pink (under doors). During their ownership they always highly maintained it, when it needed anything, it was immediately done. Always ready to go anywhere at a moment's notice. They did put a new hood on it in 1999 when they painted it as the hood it had had a couple small dings in it. More recently in the past couple years they updated it with a new radiator, fan and fan shroud, thermostat, many hoses and belts, new power steering pump and hose (flushed the power steering lines), new oil pan, new master cylinder, and new black top boot. The present owner painted this back in April 2009 when they purchased it. The color they used on the exterior was 91 Chrysler Colorado Red. They had a first class repaint done, spent $5,500 on the paint work. They had all chrome removed, exterior had some small dents and rust, which was cut out and some patched. In our present day inspection there is some rust on the bottom, but in our layman's assessments, rust that is there should not affect operation in any way. Once the exterior work was done, a high quality clear coat and new factory decals applied. As seen in photos, paint shine on this Mustang finish today is brilliant, spectacular, looks great. With that type of classic you can only enjoy looking at it - you do not get any useful physical emotional enjoyment driving your own personal collectable from a different era in American Car History. We did locate a number using a mirror (see in the mirror below), however paint has obscured our reading it. Present Engine Manifold Engine manifold below indicates 289 on top, but we had further comment from a Mustang enthusiast that the manifold you see below is also compatible with a 302 V8. We think it's a *289 - that said, we are not sure if this is a *289 or 302? Your thoughts? The identification on the top of this Mustang's manifold Transmission Verification Last 6 of VIN on Dash Plate (Starting with 100001) we clearly see 1 = which indicates this Mustang would have been born with 3 Speed Manual (repeating; this Mustang according to dash VIN plate is a 3-Speed Manual transmission). BUT -- this Mustang has a 3 speed automatic transmission. Last 6 of VIN on Door Plate (Starting with 100001) this door VIN plate we think starts with a 2 (but maybe it's a Z - see photo). This Mustang according to door VIN plate if it were a 2 does not show type transmission; so maybe it is a Z then - which shows Automatic Special (aluminum 1 piece case- (your thoughts?). We are not sure on the 3 speed automatic transmission: we don't know if the transmission in this Mustang is a Code U, T, W, X, Y, Z ? (2 or three piece case?). From the factory; automatic transmission (if it is a SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-Spd Auto that came w/ 289-cid V-8 when new as an option was $200.95). If you see the door VIN plate, maybe it is a Z? We don't know. Other things on this Mustang: Power (assisted) steering (when new it was $84.47 as an option when new), it has drum brakes, it has a Mustang branded aftermarket radio in the dash (AM/FM Cassette) ----- Let's look around the outside ... The Mustang combined sporty looks, economy, and performance in a package that had an affordable price tag. As Lee Iacocca's assistant general manager and chief engineer, Donald N. Frey was the head engineer for the Mustang project — supervising the development of the Mustang in a record 18 months from September 1962 to March 1964. — while Iacocca himself championed the project as Ford Division general manager. Drawing on inspiration from the mid-engined Ford Mustang I concept vehicle, Lee Iacocca ordered development of a new "small car" to vice-president of design at Ford, Eugene Bordinat. Bordinat tasked Ford's three design studios (Ford, Lincoln-Mercury, and Advanced Design) to create proposals for the new vehicle. The design teams had been given five goals for the design of the Mustang: It would seat four, have bucket seats and a floor mounted shifter, weigh no more than 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg) and be no more than 180 inches (4,572 mm) in length, sell for less than $2,500, and have multiple power, comfort, and luxury options. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile. The first-generation Ford Mustang was manufactured by Ford from March 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car. The Mustang's styling, with its long hood and short deck, proved wildly popular and inspired a host of competition. It was initially introduced as a hardtop and convertible with the fastback version put on sale in August 1964. At the time of its introduction, the Mustang, sharing its underpinnings with the Falcon, was slotted into a compact car segment. With each revision, the Mustang saw an increase in overall dimensions and in engine power. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967 model) and chrome (1968 model) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. In that film, McQueen drove a modified 1968 Mustang GT 2+2 Fastback chasing a Dodge Charger through the streets of San Francisco. Mustang fans worldwide loved the 1967 interior, this Mustang has remnants of 1967 model. So sharp! Factory marketing from 60's The 1968 Ford Mustang used the same body style as previous year with minor trim changes. Changes for the 1968 model increased safety which included an inside center rear view mirror. That said, this being a 1968 Mustang and having the embossed running horse motif on the seat backs, a former owner apparently replaced the rear seat from a 1966 Mustang. The "Pony" seats were very popular amongst Mustang loyalists - the Pony seat backs are a great add on this Mustang, along with the Mustang Wood GT steering wheel and the factory Mustang GT wheel covers. The 1967 model year Mustang was the first redesign of the original model. Ford's designers began drawing up a larger version even as the original was achieving sales success, and while "Iacocca later complained about the Mustang's growth, he did oversee the redesign for 1967. ----- ----- ----- Step right on in ... Because this Mustang is 50 years old, and we have different VIN numbers on the door and dash plates, and we can not read the fender VIN plate, we can not speak to the engine in this Mustang as being or not being the original engine, (even verify the engine size). (see the photo of the manifold and VIN plates in this ad). If we are able to verify the engine while this ad is running, we will post it at the bottom of the ad. We can attest that the engine does run extremely great. ----- New power steering pump, radiator The 289 cu in (4.7 L) engine was introduced in April 1963. Bore was expanded to 4.00 in (101.6 mm), becoming the standard bore for most Windsor engines. Stroke remained at 2.87 inches. The 289 weighed 506 lb (230 kg). For 1965, the compression ratio of the base 289 was raised to 9.3:1, increasing power and torque to 200 hp (149 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 282 lb·ft (382 N·m) at 2,400 rpm, respectively. 289 cu in Engine specifications were unchanged for 1966 and 1967. You will see we include many close up photos in our ads — with close up photos things you normally would not see at all like the tiniest lint or spec of dust, in close up photos the lint or dust will appear magnified, huge . When you're looking at the vehicle in person you do not even see any of the lint or dust. So as the saying goes, excuse our dust <wink>. Even though this vehicle was only given a cursory cleaning prior to the photos and videos being taken, with classics we have found the new owners want to take the vehicle exactly as we show it - so it will be exactly as you see it when you receive it. Some photos in this ad because of lighting conditions may appear unclear (or appear to have shadows). No matter how many photos, the vehicle always looks better in person. This 50 year old vintage Mustang drives really fantastic in our opinion. We are not experts, but we can tell you it has lots of power and accelerates quickly and brakes great (as you will see in the video). It drives great on the road, is quiet, and we enjoyed our drive. Where we went we were greeting by people who ogled our Mustang, from horns honking to yelling beautiful Mustang!! We savored it with the top down and easily got into the spirit of being taken back in the 60's 50 years ago. We found no issues. This Mustang is ready for the open road. | Our hearty congratulations in advance to the next owner! Expect no disappointment in the vehicle in this ad listing.
