But just in case you arent a Ford racing aficionado, heres some quick background: Before the GT40, Ferrari dominated the 24 hours of Le Mans. They had won 5 straight years from 1960-65. Fords GT40 had showed signs of promise, however battled constant failures before the entire GT40 program was handed over to the legendary Carroll Shelby at the end of the 1964 season. By 1966, with Shelby at the helm, the team was a force to be reckoned with and the GT40s went on to win the 24 hours of Le Mans four consecutive times. The GT40 provided Ford its first ever Le Mans victory, and the GT40 Mk IV that won the 1967 Le Mans is, to this day, the only car designed and built in the United States to ever win at Le Mans. You can see why the GT40 has such a historic significance within the classic car industry. This is why companies like Superformance continue to build GT40 replicas like the one we have before you today. This 2011 frame-off built GT40 is 100% street legal but dont under estimate it, like its older counterparts, its easily as capable on the track as well. While this killer GT40 is best experienced in the flesh, look closely at the photos and youll be able to see the amount of impressive and accurate details that were engineered into the design from day one. The body sits covered in a retro blue and orange Gulf paint scheme that pays tribute to the famed and original GT40s. At the front of the car, new headlights, new driving lights and new chrome trimmed parking lights are housed vertically behind aerodynamic Lexan covers. Between those lights, a slightly canted grille opening houses satin black bumperettes at the sides of a cross flow radiator which catches fresh air for cooling and provides much needed downforce during triple digits speeds sits covered in a retro blue and orange Gulf paint scheme that pays tribute to the famed and original GT40s. At the front of the car, new headlights, new driving lights and new chrome trimmed parking lights are housed vertically behind aerodynamic Lexan covers. Between those lights, a slightly canted grille opening houses satin black bumperettes at the sides of a cross flow radiator which catches fresh air for cooling and provides much needed downforce during triple digits speeds. At the back of the radiator fans, polished fuel caps for the cars original-style fuel tanks sit in front of a new glass windshield thats cleared by a street legal windshield wiper; and original style, vented Lexan side windows sitting low in traditional race style. At the sides of the car, aluminum finished door handles and cowl hinges sit flush below pristine chrome bullet-style racing mirrors. At the back of the car, a Lexan engine cover displays the cars spectacular Roush 427 in front of three more original style air intakes and a subtle metal deck lid spoiler. Below that deck lid spoiler, vertically oriented chrome trimmed tail lights sit at the sides of a mesh rear valence which hangs centered Aero Turbine exhaust tips above a satin black rear tow bar. To keep it as authentic as possible the builders opted for a familiar power plant to the GT40. The monster 427R Roush crate engine that produces 550hp. It achieves this impressive horsepower number by utilizing an iron 4-bolt block, steel crank, H-beam rods, forged aluminum pistons, aluminum CNC ported heads, and a roller cam. Even more impressive is the fact that the engine runs on premium pump gas! That air/fuel mixture is supplied by a fully CNC ported intake which receives air from a Weber-style eight stack induction system, and a Roush calibrated electronic fuel injection system which receives fuel from a high volume electronic fuel pump. Spent gasses travel out the 427 and exit out of wrap around headers that exit out from the center of the rear bumper through dual exhaust tips. If you put the GT40 on a lift youll reveal what looks like almost no details since the underside is fitted with a floor pan to help reduce drag at high speeds. But if you look closely you will see details that reveal how this GT40 is capable of handling just as much as straight-line speed. At the front youll find a fully independent suspension using unequal length a-arm design, coil springs over telescopic shock absorbers, adjustable ride height and an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension is similar as its a fully independent suspension but it uses radius rods and unequal length a-arm design. It also has a toe-control link, adjustable coil springs over telescopic shock absorbers, adjustable ride height and an anti-roll bar. Bolted to the massive Roush power plant is a ZF style RBT 5DS/2 5-speed transaxle that is equipped with a 3.77 ring and pinion. The stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel non-assisted disc brakes that have the capability to adjust the front to rear ratio by a balance bar located in the cockpit. This GT40s interior is, without a doubt, 100% business. Original-style bucket seats wear upgraded silver rivets and Williams 4-point racing harnesses. At the front of the car, an original-style dash hangs a correct Smiths gauge layout, which includes a 200 MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tachometer above an original-style adjustable pedal box. At the bottom of the car, an offset driver-biased tunnel holds a repositioned shifter and standard emergency brake above like-new black carpet which displays colorful GT40 embroidery over original-style door sill fuel tanks. Above those fuel tanks, original-style Hartswell door latches and catches secure doors which feature both basic door panels and drivers side controls for the standard equipment air conditioning system. In front of the driver, an original-style removable steering wheel features a colorful GT40 logo at the center of gloss black spokes and a leather rim; and behind the driver, a Lexan window provides constant monitoring of the 427 engine. Everything is essentially new from the carpet to the headliner, and with the addition of a few street friendly refinements, this purpose-built cockpit has become a surprisingly comfortable place to spend highway time.
