1996 Ford F-450 XL Description

INTRODUCTIONUp for sale is my 1996 Ford F-Super Duty (F450) 7.3L Diesel QUIGLEY 4X4 with only 57K original miles. This one of a kind truck is in spectacular condition as would be expected of such a low mileage vehicle. As important as the low mileage concerning the condition of this truck is the fact that the truck has never plowed! Never! I bought this truck almost 2 years ago from the second owner who loved it and cared for it as well as the original owner did. I own a very small specialty car dealer and originally purchased the truck to sell immediately. However, this was before I drove the truck a few times and absolutely fell in love with it. I've decided to now sell the truck, and replace it with something much less special, as last year I could not bring myself to drive it in the winter and subject it to the harsh conditions and roads of the North East. To me the truck is far too nice to use for daily work. It's exceedingly rare to find these 7.3L trucks with such low mileage these days. Most have been worked to 400K miles and retired or left outside to rot. What's even more rare is to find an old body style (OBS) 7.3L with all of its original sheet metal and undercarriage in such superb condition. Take that into account before considering what this particular 7.3L is; An F-Super Duty with the famous QUIGLEY 4X4 Conversion that was installed when the truck was new. This truck is certainly one of a kind with its infamous 7.3L Diesel, 5 speed manual transmission, QUIGLEY 4X4, and only 57K miles. I guarantee you will not find another one like it for sale anywhere in the country and you may never see such a pristine example of such a rare and desirable truck ever again. These OBS Ford 7.3s are quickly becoming collector's items, and although I know in the future I will regret selling it, I hate to just see it sit idle in the garage. This truck deserves a new home with someone who has more time to enjoy it than I do.
QUIGLEY 4X4 "CONQUER YOUR WORLD”
If you are looking at this truck you more than likely are aware of QUIGLEY. The Manchester Pennsylvania company made famous for making some of the most robust and versatile 4X4 conversion vehicles on the planet. The company is now mostly known for its 4X4 Van conversions and go anywhere campers. However, there was a time not too long ago that QUIGLEY was also well known for their truck conversions. Starting in 1974 Quigley started offering the Quigley 4X4 turning regular vans and trucks into go anywhere billygoats that allowed Quigley customers to truly, quote, "Conquer Your World”. It's hard to imagine today but in the not too distant past trucks and SUVs were not as commonly factory 4x4s. Quigley saw the market for 4X4 vehicles and jumped on it quicker than the vehicle manufacturers. In 1989 came the first Ford F-Super Duty (The original F-450) Quigley 4X4. As surprising as it may seem now, with all of the 4X4 F-450s and F-550s running around, and there immense popularity, Ford never offered a factory F-Super Duty 4X4 during the Old Body Style Years of 1987-1997. So, Quigley being Quigley, they naturally saw the market for a desirable 4X4 conversion for the Class 4 truck. It turned out to be quite popular despite the heavy price tag usually increasing the total price of the truck by 33%. Ford quickly recognized their mistake and for the New Body Style Ford Super Duty trucks, starting in 1999, factory 4X4 became an option on all trucks, even the new F-550. That was the end of the Quigley 4X4 F-Super Duty but the company continues to offer mind blowing options for 4X4 vans that surprisingly never caught on in the 'Big Three's" factories. Just remember if you drive a factory 4X4 over the 350 or 3500 level you have the innovative Quigley 4X4 to thank! This option package is certainly what stands out most on this truck. It also adds significantly to its value and collectability. Most of these F-SuperDuty conversions were used in rugged work applications such as ambulances, fire, and brush trucks and as such they have mostly all been sadly worked to death. To see a Quigley Super Duty with 57K miles in this condition is absolutely unheard of.
CONDITION OPTIONS AND POWERTRAIN
As, I have mentioned in the opening paragraphs I am the third owner of this truck. When the original owner bought this truck he immediately had the Quigley 4X4 conversion done before taking delivery. The truck was also ordered with the optional and legendary 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel engine. This engine has rightfully become a cult sensation over the years as the single best engine ever offered in a truck. Its place in history has been cemented by the woefully inadequate engines that attempted replaced it; the 6.0L and 6.4L which never could match the dependability of the 444 Cubic Inch monster. The 7.3L in Old Body Style trim, such as this truck, has an even more special place in my heart than the newer 7.3s as all 1997 and prior 7.3s used a "single shot" injection system. As opposed to the "split shot" injection system of the later 7.3s from 99-03. The single shot injection is much louder and angrier than the later, emissions helping, split shot system. That makes the 94-97 7.3L not only the most dependable diesel ever offered in a truck; it is also is the best sounding diesel ever offer in a truck. The owner also ordered the truck in the stunning dark green color you see in the pictures below. Reminiscent of Steve McQueen's "Highland Green" 1968 Mustang GT390 from the movie Bullitt this is without a doubt the best color on these Old Body Style Ford trucks. Aside from those three orders Air Conditioning, that blows ice cold, is the only other option to be found in this no-nonsense truck. On the floor you will see there is a mounted PTO. This truck was originally a dump truck used to haul wood out of the forests on a farm. The dump body was later replaced with the flatbed seen here so it could be used as more of a recreational truck since it was so well loved be the previous owners. While the PTO controls remain the piston for the dump body does not. The bed does not tip. The truck has dual fuel tanks, one of which is not in the truck and is still in brand new condition. The second tank is included in the sale and can be transported in the passenger's foot well area, standing upright, or strapped to the flatbed. The second tank needed to be removed in order for the previous dump body's underpinnings to be installed. The truck was never, ever, used to plow and it has seen very little winter driving on public roads. This is why the truck has seen so few miles and why it has managed to stay so remarkably free of rust and rot after all these years. Now that being said this is still a 20 year old truck that has never been restored. While it is in absolutely outstanding original condition there are small areas that could use touching up. These minor blemishes will all be shown in pictures below. The front bumper for example has started to have a small split in the chrome and could use a re-chrome to be perfect. Also, the driver's seat stitching has split and needs to be re-sown. All of the seat padding is still intact and in excellent condition the vinyl just needs to be stitched. Otherwise, the interior is nothing short of perfect. Nothing is broken or worn and everything shows almost as new. The heater works great as does the Air-conditioning. The second owner installed an aftermarket radio in the truck that I wanted to replace with a factory unit. Mechanically the truck is all there. The 7.3L fires up like a shot even in 10 degree weather. I replaced the glow plug relay last year and the glow plugs themselves could not work better. Take a look in the engine bay and you will immediately be able to see how well cared for this truck was. It is the cleanest 7.3 engine bay I have seen in over 10 years. The engine runs great unsurprisingly for a 7.3 and the 5 speed transmission shifts flawlessly with nice engagement from the clutch. The front end is extremely tight which is pretty uncommon in my experience with older solid front axle Fords. It does not wander. The front brakes have been replaced just a couple of months ago but the back brakes could do with being replaced also. The truck does need the parking brake cable replaced and the reverse lights were never wired up when the bodies were swapped.
IN CONCLUSION
I hope this truck ends up going to a true enthusiast or a collector who will care for it and preserve it. It is a wonderful old rig for going to meets, to tow your muscle/race car/camper/boat or simply just cruising around. The 5 speed is the only way to go in these old trucks with the 7.3L as it really allows you to enjoy the full experience of the excellent diesel motor. They don't make real trucks like this anymore and they will never make them again. It's a raw visceral experience that only an old diesel with a stick can capture. Comparable to the unique experience offered by an old muscle car. Well here it is folks the best looking truck ever made, in the best color, with the best engine, the best transmission, in the rarest configuration as a Quigley 4X4 F-SuperDuty, in possibly the nicest condition of any in the country with possibly the lowest mileage. One of a kind. Now get out there and "Conquer Your World”.
