Following World War II, returning American GIs were impressed by the adaptability, simplicity, and all-terraincapabilities of the original Jeep. Its popularity quickly spawned a host of competing designs, while a burgeoningaftermarket industry supplied a multitude of accessories and a number of clubs and enthusiast magazinesappeared. Ford astutely discovered that a niche existed for a small, car-like, four-wheel-drive vehicle with stronghighway performance and the ability to tackle the rugged backcountry. Acceleration and comfort weredetermined to be important selling points, as well as the upscale aura that continues to define the sport-utilityvehiclemarket today.
The Ford Bronco was introduced in late 1965 for the 1966 model year. It was available in roadster, pickup, andwagon form and featured many Falcon-based mechanical components, as well as an impressive list of options, which allowed buyers to personalize their Bronco. Sales were aided by Ford’s “Total Performance” motorsportscampaign, and the successful Baja racing Broncos of Bill Stroppe carried the Ford banner in off-road racingcircles during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
