1971 Ford Thunderbird Description

Here we have a mostly-restored1971 Ford Thunderbird, 2-dr landau-style coupe, rust-free with a custom dark green metallic paint job and new original-style vinyl top. Runs strong with its 429-V8sporting the coveted Dove-6 heads.Really hugs the roadwithnew tires / shocks / springs / front-end. All-in-all a fine example of an early'70s"personal luxury car".

I purchased this car about 2,000 miles ago in 2012 from a chap near Los Angeles (who either haddriven it out from Minnesota or who hadbought it from someone there, I forget which).

I have all receipts from the previous owner and everything since (most work done by my trusty mechanic Bob Hughes in El Cajon). Also I'lltoss ina full set of manuals including a large fold-out set of wiring diagrams.

Here are the major things I've done in the 4 years I've had it:

-- rebuilt the Dove-6 heads

-- rewired the underhood harness using the kit from famed automotive electrical expert Mark Hamilton (madelectrical.com). Added a voltmeter to replace the ammeter I had to disconnect.

-- replaced entire cooling system (and added a coolant overflow tank and coolant filter)

-- replaced dual exhaust system

-- new master cylinder + brake shoes + fluid flush

-- new alternator w/ internal regulator

-- new Costcobattery (in 2014).Maintained by a Save-a-Battery maintenance/charger, which I'll include.

-- rebuilt carburetor

-- new shocks, springs, and front-end parts

-- electronic ignition upgrade (actually by previous owner)

-- new Cooper white wall tires (actually 2 by previous owner just prior to selling it).

-- new ignition switch and lock cylinder.

As you mightexpect there are a few issues with a car of this vintage, which I hadn't gotten around to:

-- passenger door window motorneeds replaced.

-- wipers inoperable (probably wiper motor... I'll get that taken care of if it concerns you).

-- horn disabled (relay stuck on -- couldn't locate so just disconnected horn button in steering wheel. Quieter that way... ;) )

--AC compressor needs replaced

-- heater core bypassed

-- antennaremoved (was trying to find a motorized version).

-- stereo radio and clock both inoperable. But they look great!

-- padded dash has cracks. One small hole in headliner near edge.

-- trunk lock coverhas been removed -- now inglove box awaiting a new spring

-- roof-rail weather-strip works okay but it's not the original style.

-- headlight switch knob is loose. I'll try to get that fixed (or toss in a pair of pliers... )

Cosmetically, the paint, chrome, and vinyl top are excellent. Other than the above issues, it's really not that far away from a show car.

If you have any questions, my name is Gary Smith and my phone number is 619-461-4079. The car and I residenear sunny San Diego 91977 (home of the 2016 MLB All-Star game).
