1990 Red Mustang 5.0GT Convertible
1990 Ford Mustang Description
In 1990, I visited my fiance's mom and step father in Saginaw, Michigan. When we arrived, there was a note on the door saying they were out for a ride. We let ourselves in and a half hour later they roared up the driveway in this gorgeous 5.0 GT Mustang convertible. My in-laws worked and retired from GM, this fun Mustang when driven to work couldn't be parked in the GM lot. She had to park it in the foreign car lot.
This was their extra car that they drove on vacations "up North" many times with my wife and me. The Mustang was always serviced by the local Ford dealer, and they detailed it every fall and put it in storage until spring came. That was an exciting time. As they grew older, the Mustang continued to be professionally detailed and stored each winter but got used less and less. When my beautiful mother in law died 5 years ago, her husband asked me if I wanted to buy it and bring it out to Maryland. I did.
Once we got it here I learned quickly that this undriven car needed work. I always disliked the interior, black and white tweed mixed with grey leather and plush grey carpeting. I had it changed to black microsuede, black regular pile carpeting and I replaced the sagging door pockets with just straight black carpet.
I never liked the paint on the Mustang, it seemed to dull over the years and being an interior designer, I changed the color to a more brilliant version of the original color. The original color remains in the hood and inside the gas cap. I also didn't like the original turbine aluminum wheels. Hard to clean, and never attractive, so I put on brighter wheels with slightly larger tires. I've also had the transmission rebuilt, brakes replaced, all hoses and plugs changed, complete new dual exhaust, and a/c and heater core serviced. All the interior lights, power locks, cruise control, and trunk under hood light and trunk release switch in the glove box work as new.Besides the complete on frame restoration, the Mustang has just been in the shop with fresh oil and given the blessing by mechanic to be a fine everyday driver. We don't use the car as I thought we would, it sits in the garage year after year only being driven several times a year. City living and a 1990 Mustang GT don't mix well.
The original 76,000 miles are all gentle miles within a loving family. One mechanic wouldn't believe that the headlight lens are original, because they aren't fogged up or discolored. They are original and like the rest of the car, a true blue American muscle car from 1990.
