1997 Honda Del Sol Description
1997 Honda Del Sol DOHC VTEC 1.6L.
**THIS IS A VERY RARE CAR**
Only 500 of the 1997 models with this engine were sold in the U.S. It won't be long before this car will be considered a collector's item. I am the second owner, I bought it in 2004.
Try to find one of these cars for sale and you'll see how rare it is to find one at all, much less in decent shape. It has 130,780 miles on it and that isn't much for a Honda which we know can go strong for at least another 100-150k miles. The engine alone is worth $3200 at this mileage. It is not the S or SOHC Si model, those don't have the horsepower of the DOHC 1.6L and those other models are much more common.
It's a 5 speed manual, which is the only way the VTEC 1.6L model was made. The targa top comes off and slides into a storage rack in the trunk. Automatic windows and locks, AC, ABS, cruise control. The back window also goes down. It's a 2-seater, there is no back seat at all. There's a powered Infinity subwoofer in the trunk, I think it's a 10. It was lowered about 2" with Tein springs in 2004. It has some cosmetic flaws that you'd expect for a 20-year-old car. I still have the stock springs, those are included in the sale, as well as a $65 car cover. It has a cold air intake and a stock strut bar on the engine. It also has an old school VIPER Alarm installed. The spoiler is aftermarket and the paint is flaking off of it. Easy fix - get the spoiler painted or have a new one put on.
It has been maintained by a Honda mechanic pretty much the whole time I've owned it. The car has been taken care of. I hope it goes to someone who will take care of it and love it as much as I have. I'm truly going to miss this car, it has been very dependable.. and it gets a lot of attention on the road!
Please feel free to ask me any questions.

I don't currently have a way to get it up on a lift in order to take pictures of the under carriage, but I'll see what I can do. It has mainly been driven in the Hampton Roads area of VA which is not in the salt belt. The roads here are rarely salted in the winter and rust usually isn't an issue around here.
The AC is cold and runs well. I'm not a smoker, so the car smells fine.
Timing belt was changed last at 100,000-110,000 miles.
A few issues:
The front bumper has an indented scuff from when a truck with a tow ball on the back bumped into it and I never got it fixed (see photo). Also, there are a few spots with chipped off paint on the rear bumper (see photo). The spoiler is aftermarket and the clear coat is flaking off of it (I don't have a clear photo of that, but I can take one).
It needs an antenna, it doesn't currently have one.
Sometimes the targa top will leak a little on the driver's side in a heavy downpour. This is an issue with all Del Sols. This doesn't seem to be a problem when I'm driving, only if it's parked, so I just keep a towel in there when I hear the weather might get crazy. I hear you can get some sort of seal treatment to remedy this problem.
The lighting behind the comfort control panel on the dash comes on and off intermittently. This tells me that there's some sort of loose wire or fuse issue behind there but I haven't taken the time to address it.
There was an exhaust leak a few years ago that I got fixed. I also had a new muffler put on. I have had the oil pan replaced as well.
Feel free to ask me any questions!
