1970 Jaguar XJ6 Description

I am listing this 1970 XJ6 for a local British Car Club member. He found the car on Craigslist in Kansas, drove out there, and trailered it back here. He bought the car for his wife but when he got it home she did not like it so now he would like to sell it. The VIN is 1L55521. Clear California title. The mileage shows 99,834 but I have no way of verifying this.
The following is from the CL listing of the seller in Kansas;
  • Restored California car with extensive work and upgrades over an 11 year period
  • Rust free CA car with bare-metal respray
  • All new rubber
  • New windshield
  • Exterior parts rechromed
  • All new seats, carpets, underfelt, headliner, and wood
  • Nardi steering wheel
  • Custom stereo
  • Weber carb conversion, original carbs come with car
  • Johns Cars 700R4 transmission conversion
  • Electronic ignition
  • Powder coated wheels
  • New or reconditioned window motors
  • New seat belts
  • New motor mounts and front suspension rubber
  • New steering rack
  • New brake master and booster
  • Tappet hold down kit
  • New Pirelli tires
  • Good oil pressure, does not burn oil, puffs a little on startup due to worn valve stem seals
Now for my assessment. The car is a very attractive driver-quality car with some loose ends. It would benefit greatly from some sweat equity. As the previous owner worked on the car for 11 years obviously all the work is not fresh. The paint is really very nice (7/10) but there are a couple of small dings (Dent Pro?) and some small chips here and there. Chrome is very good. Interior is obviously redone but door panels look original. Some small items like dented and scratched sill plates detract. The engine bay is pretty scruffy. The underside is clean and rust free. The fit of the boot lid is a bit offat therear and my body guy said it probably had a little fender bender back there at some point..
Driving wise, the car runs strong at full throttle and high rpm but stumbles and runs poorly at idle and low speed. As the compression is good(125/125/125/125/125/135) this issurely a function of jetting for the Weber carbs. When we pulled the plugs they all showed evidence of running rich which would account for the poor low speed running. The 700R auto shifts firmly and cleanly. Brakes, steering, and suspension are all good. The car feels great going down the road. Exhaust looks stock but is solid. All gauges, switchgear, and lights work except the brake warning light stays on and the fuel gauge seems a bit erratic. The handbrake does not work. The A/C needs a recharge.
