1948 Lincoln Cabriolet Convertible
1948 Lincoln Continental Description
Selling off part of my collection. The 1948 Lincoln Continental was the brainchild of Edsel Ford and executed by Ford's chief stylist, Bob Gregorie. It was introduced in 1940 as an exclusive, luxurious, handcrafted automobile for the status conscious consumer. The early Continental was recognized by the Museum of Modern Art as one of eight automotive "works of art" and by Time magazine as one of the top ten best-designed commercial products. The '48 Lincoln Cabriolet convertible is recognized as the last of the "full Classics" by the Classic Car Club of America. There were only 452 Cabriolets built for model year 1948 and the registry for the Edsel's Lincolns show that 42 are still on the road.
The Lincoln Continental Convertible has a split bench seat, wide whitewall tires, rear mounted spare, fender skirts, power convertible top, power windows, chrome bumpers and grille. This model also has working power antenna.
This car went from Detroit to Erie, Pennsylvania and then to Brunswick, Georgia. A local doctor on St. Simmons Island purchased the vehicle and drove but was not happy with the under-powered V12. He had it professionally upgraded to a 12 volt system with a Ford 400 and C-6 and air conditioning. An LTD rear suspension replaced the wishbone. NOTHING was modified or extra holes drilled. It is my understanding that all original parts will bolt back on to their original mountings. The work was done by a true professional. All original parts have been saved and are available.
The body is virtually rust free with slight corrosion between the aluminum windshield and cowl...bi-metal reaction. The original radio has been replaced but the '48 radio is also available.
The car was stored for years in a barn near Darien, Georgia and unfortunately, the rats got into the wiring. Over the years that I have had the car, it has always been kept inside. I started working on the wiring and have most of the lights and accessories working. The fog lights and 3rd brake light are not working. The power windows work if voltage is applied to the switch. An earlier attempt to install an alarm in the car is crude but does work. The convertible top is in great shape with a glass window...however, the rats ate the straps and the surround around the window so it cannot be zipped and strapped in place. I have replacement material. They also ate the wiring under the rear seat leading to the top controlling relays....would recommend a solid state replacement but I do have all the wiring diagrams and maintenance books for the vehicle.
The car runs and drives and I keep it on a "Battery Tender". I would not try and drive it home unless you live around the corner as while I start it weekly, I have only backed it out and pulled it back into the garage. I usually trailer it to shows. The glass is good, the paint is decent but really needs a repaint. The car was originally a pale yellow. There are several small holes on both doors where old mirrors were removed so that Rare hinge mounted mirrors could be added. The chrome varies from good to decent with three small pieces in the rear, needing to be re-chromed. But all chrome is solid and not dented or rusted.
I have tried to describe the car as accurately as possible but with all vehicles this old, I recommend that you come look at it if possible. I can provide more pictures if needed. I reserve the right to end the auction early as the car is also being advertised locally. This is a sweet ride that needs a new home. The interstate ride is smooth but would place disk brakes on front unless being restored.
A $500 deposit is required by the successful bidder at auctions end with the balance due within 7 days unless other arrangements are made. The buyer is responsible for pickup and delivery. The vehicle can be stored if immediate pickup is not possible. I can assist in loading or I can deliver within several hundred miles for $2.00 a mile. The balance must be in certified funds or wire transfer. Please call me if you have any questions about the vehicle or payment requirements. Bill...912-604-3264
