1955 Mercedes SL300 Gullwing Replica
2007 Mercedes-Benz Other Replica Description
Yes, it’s a replica, but what a replica. A car like this doesn’t come around very often. A vintage 1955 Mercedes SL300 Gullwing will cost you over one million dollars at least. But here’s a chance to own a replica of the legendary sports car, for just a small percentage of an original one – and in many ways this car is better! This is a 2007 replica of the iconic car, made in Florida by Speedster Motorcars, who made about 20 replica Gullwing cars, this being number 7. I’m told they sold for nearly $200,000 new. This one has barely been driven and looks stunning. One man saw it and broke into tears, saying it was the most beautiful car he had ever seen. Even when he was told it was a replica, he said it didn’t matter. The car is remarkable. This amazing car sat in a car collection and gathered dust. It had 650 miles on it when I bought it. It now has 1,500 miles. Because the car sat for so long, it needed several things, all of which I fixed or replaced: battery, ground cable, starter, AC, inside door handles, door struts, turbo brakes, side map pockets, and radiator fan. The car works perfectly now and doesn’t need anything that I can see. Just pushbutton start it and go. It’s really cool. The only thing to note is that the paint has splintered in a few spots around the car. My guess is the maker of the car didn’t put many layers of paint on it before they sold it, or they put too much paint on. At first I thought the cracks could be in the fiberglass body, but two mechanics looked at it and said they believe it is the paint. But you only notice it when you look close. Otherwise, the car is stunning. Also, the car is a “fair weather” friend. While it doesn’t leak at all when you drive it in the rain, when you open the doors, water gathered around the top could drip on you. I’m saying this in the way of full disclosure, so you know this is a great car but not a perfect car. Besides, you shouldn’t take beautiful cars out in the rain. I had the car appraised in 2015. They said, “Vehicle is garage kept and driven on a limited basis. Appears to be mechanically sound. Features include General Motors drivetrain, fiberglass body with “gullwing” doors, wire wheels, power disk brakes, power steering, air conditioning, and leather seats.” Appraiser also started it, drove it, and loved it. He never saw an original Gullwing but said he probably wouldn’t know the difference. The real difference in this replica are the wire rim wheels. No vintage Gullwing had such good tires, or so snazzy looking. Of course, this car has AC and better brakes than the vintage one, and is easier to steer. I’m told the frame was built specifically for this car, and everyone says it is well done and impressive. It’s a kit car made by hand by professionals to resemble the vintage car. They did a spectacular job in recreating the famous supercar. Engine is a Chevy 5.3L, Transmission is Chevy, Automatic Transmission, 6 cyclinders, Black outside, Tan interior. Finally, consider this: an original Gullwing from the mid-1950s was a heat trap with no AC, tough brakes, hard steering, and a rear end that swung out. And today it would cost you a small fortune to own and a lot more to insure, upkeep, and repair. This stunning replica is safer, smoother, cooler, easier, and far cheaper. I’m only selling it because I have a car collection already and am aiming for an actual Gullwing as an investment at some point. I’ll hate to see this go, but if you feel you’ll love it, and will give it a good home, and will love driving it and showing it off, then you should check out the photos and either buy it now or bid on it.
