1977 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 450SL Description

Rolling Restoration 1977 450SL
I am facilitating the saleof aBlue on Blue 1977 Mercedes for a friend. Comes with hard top and black soft top. Due to living out in our wonderful Eco Friendly weather, the paint was oxidized a little and there was some moss growing where it should not. The soft top has a goodly collection of pine pollen that will need attention to remove. One of those upholstery vac things should do just fine. The top does get soaked and piddle a bit on the inside. Wash and put some 303 protectant and it will be water safe.
Car was being worked on to remedy an intermittent smoking condition, but the owner got too busy and needed to work on other cars in his collection. It sat outside for five years while more time to fix it was never forthcoming. Now he really wants this gone as soon as possible to free up space.
There are many positives, such as a very solid body, paint that I just used Griot's products to buff up. Not perfect yet. You would want to use some more aggressive products to really bring her back, or better yet, prep her for paint next winter and driver her until then. All glass is intact, the passenger side window does function, driver side may just need a switch, the plastic soft window needs attention, but is very solid and good. The leather seats should be fed, but are in really great shape with no tears or wear. The front carpet is perished. It looks ok, but has water damage and is aging. The rear carpets are great and the rest of the interior will clean up well. Engine is complete and ready for you to drive her home to dig deeper and solve the mystery smoke. It can use a good detailing.
The less gooder stuff includes, car had not run in 5 years, but we put a spare battery in and a few gallons of new fuel and she fired right up. The moss had accumulated and did paint as well as other wear. There are a few ding, scratches and other paint/ minor rusting that a DIY guy can deal with. The SL does still smoke, which has no impact on drivability or even show on the spark plugs The fog lamp lens is broken, but that glass is cheap. Though I did some minor wash and wax it really wants a good detailing. I have not seen, but am told there is a dent in the hard top. Though the car has AC, I have not tested it and expect it would need a recharge.
I took her for a short drive to test safety bits. She shifts very smoothly, has lots of power, steers well and the feel in the cockpit is very nice. The brakes are a bit soft and should have a look at once you get her home. Given the mileage, it could be pads or just needs fresh fluid.

For those outside the Seattle area, bring a trailer so you get home safely given the brake situation.
