1987 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series black Description

For Sale 1987 Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel. The 300D Turbo has the smooth “new six-cylinder engine, for its time the popular and powerful M603 which was the most powerful of its kind anywhere at the time, and made the 300D Turbo the world’s fastest diesel sedan (IIRC some 130 mph, or close to it). These super diesels 124’S were imported to the U.S. only during 1987.The car is in excellent mechanical and driving condition meaning everything works A/C, Heat, Windows, Locks, Power Seats, Power Mirrors etc etc. if you wanted to drive from LA to New York you could and it would get you there and back safely. Now If you’re looking for a real shiner that is drip free of oil and shiny this one is not for you.

The Good:Upgraded Bright white H.I.D. Xenon lights.

Updated the stereo with CD player, USB Port, and Auxiliary Jack connection for both Apple and Android devices.

OnStar FMV Mirror with blue tooth voice recognition services including dialing by name and directory. A full array of concierge services, directions Mechanical Breakdown Assistance and accident detection through an OnStar Subscription. The OnStar system also acts as a standalone phone system and works in very remote locations.

I have also updated the A/C system with no expense spared to the tune of just over 4K which blows ICE Cold. The car has never been in an accident butdoes have a SALVAGED Title due to the huge expense my insurance company had to pay in completely rebuilding the Air Conditioning system.A New A/C Compressor, New Condenser, New Evaporator New Blower Motor, New Regulator, Receiver/Dryer everything replaced that had to do with cooling including vent motors and servos behind the dash.

I recently replaced the drive shaft flex plate’s front and rear and rear CV axels, new belt tensioner shock. New alternator and super heavy duty Battery. All maintenance services have been performed, Transmission, rear Axle, Radiator with Mercedes Blue Coolant and New Hoses top and Bottom.I have about $7500 invested in making the car reliable, safe and sound. Was it worth it? to most probably not but to me I like safety and convenience in a timeless classic. I am enjoying the ride and creature comforts of today’s technologies in yesterday’s classics.

The body is straight and still has that timeless look that fits in anywhere. The car is heavy and solid to drive. It is my daily driver as I prefer to drive this over my other three newer Benzes.Built in limited numbers makes it a very difficult vehicle to find especially in good running condition. It took me nearly a year to find this highly sought Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel.I have spent allot of time and money making this diesel a safe reliable car that I could just get into and drive. I have taken the car on a 1200 mile trip every month for the last 6 months and it drives and performs flawlessly as the miles melt away in comfort and silence.

This Mercedes is very economical averaging 20 miles in the city and up to 34 on the highway on average. I have done both better and worse with the mileage. I am selling my 300D after putting on 100K trouble free miles, with several 100K left! because it has become time to switch out models and do it again to take on my monthly 1200-mile road trips.

New: A/C Compressor

New: Alternator

New: Brake Rotors all around / New Pads All Around

New: Tires all around

New: Battery

New: Belt

New: Receipts and Paperwork for everything

The Not So Good:The paint is dull “Matte” finish and has a few scratches

and chips.Annoying Transmissions on these buck and shift hard. Not an indication of failure just older style vacuum controlled transmissions. They do make a kit to reduce the jolt and bucking, however the tradeoff is a shorter transmission with the kit to smooth it out. The bucking is only when the car is cold. Once the car gets to operating temp the bucking stops and smooths out. It is normal I have had several mechanics check it out and they say the trans is fine and if you leave the bucking alone it will last practically forever.I myself have put almost 100K miles on it all trouble free.

cruise control does not work and the sunroof is intermittent.

The Bad:Main Seal Oil Leak

I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO END LISTING EARLY AS THE VEHICLE IS ALSO LISTED LOCALLY.

Below is additional information about these super cars from Wiiki.

W124 is amid-sizedvehicle platform. Due to the high cost of German engineering and build quality, the W124 was designed to last many miles, with awards actually given and worn by high mileage versions.

Front suspension uses a separate spring and damper with a rubber top mount. The rear suspension of the W124 features the Mercedesmulti-link axleintroduced in 1982 with the Mercedes 190 and which is now standard on many modern cars. Estate cars (and optionally, saloons and coupes) had Citroen-like self-leveling rear suspension with suspension struts rather than shock absorbers, gas-filled suspension spheres to provide damping and an under bonnet pressurizing pump. Unlike the traditionalCitroënapplication Mercedes opted for a fixed ride height and employed rear coil springs to maintain the static ride height when parked.

Much of the 124's engineering and many of its features were advanced automotive technology at its introduction, incorporating innovations that have been adopted throughout the industry.[6]It had one of the lowest coefficient of drag (Cd) of any vehicle of the time (0.28 for the 200/200D model for the European market with 185/65 R15 tires) due to its aerodynamic body, that included plastic molding for the undercarriage to streamline airflow beneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise. It had a singlewindscreen wiperthat had an eccentric mechanism at its base that extended the wiper's reach to the top corners of the windscreen (more than if it had traveled in a simple arc). The saloon/sedan, coupés and convertibles had optional rear headrests that would fold down remotely to improve rearward visibility when required. This feature was not available for the T-model because of its specific layout (no space to store the retractable headrests), but the station-wagon serially came with a "neighbour-friendly" rear door that was pulled in the shut-position silently and automatically by a sensor-controlled servomotor. With the exception of the 200, which was equipped with a Stromberg or Pierburgcarburetorbut was not available to theUnited States, fuel injectionwas standard, and the engines incorporated features that maximized performance. The most notable such feature was the addition of an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system which, in conjunction with a semi-electronic fuel injection system, could make the engine run more efficiently. This improved fuel consumption while simultaneously meeting stricter emission regulations. Mercedes-Benz's four-wheel drive system, the4Maticwas first introduced on the W124 in 1986.

The 603.96 engine has a capacity of 2996cc and was an engineering marvel in pre-chamber design and a technological leap forward from the earlier 5 cylinder OM617. It produced 143 hp at 4600 rpm (euro market without catalytic converter produced 148hp) and 195 ft.lb at 2400 rpm with a compression ratio of 22.0:1. Versions 603.96x and 603.97x are turbocharged. Only turbocharged models of the 603 series were available to the U.S. market. The camshafts and injection pump are driven by duplex chain from the crankshaft. A separate single row chain drives the oil pump. The camshaft operated the valves via hydraulic bucket tappets; valve clearance adjustment is automatic.

Fuel is injected into a pre-combustion chamber. A Bosch M in-line injection pump is used, with a mechanical governor and vacuum-operated stop control. The pump is lubricated by a connection to the engine oil circulation and the fuel lift pump is mounted on the side of the injection pump. Preheating is by glow plugs with automatic control of preheating time.
