After driving the new Mercedes-Benz SLK350, I wrote in our June 2004 issue: "If the SLK350 is the best of Veuve Cliquot, then we can expect the V-8-powered SLK55 AMG to be Dom Pérignon." Now I can tell you that I have had my Dom Pérignon!
Externally, the differences from the V-6-powered SLK350 are few. They are limited to 18- rather than 17-in. wheels, a slightly different front air dam, a discreet but efficient rear spoiler, which reduces lift over the rear axle by 36 percent, and four instead of two tailpipes. It also rides about 1 in. lower.
But under the skin, the SLK55 is almost a new car. Instead of adding a supercharger to the V-6 engine, as was done for the short-lived SLK32 AMG, Mercedes-Benz's AMG division has managed to squeeze the 5.4-liter naturally aspirated V-8 into the SLK's diminutive nose.
AMG's V-8 develops 355 bhp and a hefty 376 lb.-ft. of torque and drives the rear wheels through M-B's new 7-speed automatic transmission, modified with AMG's Speed Shift fully adaptive program. Not only does it include Comfort and Sport modes, but also a Manual mode that can be operated sequentially either by moving the gear selector to the right or left, or by fingertip paddles behind the steering wheel (right for up-shifts, left for downshifts).
AMG modifications to the transmission program include torque-converter lockup from 1st gear on, so that, once the car is running with no converter "cushion," throttle response is as quick throughout the range as with a manual transmission. Switching from Comfort to Sport not only raises the shift-up and shift-down speeds, but quickens the shift itself by up to 35 percent at the cost of only a slight loss of smoothness. A fairly hard application of the brakes also makes the transmission shift down into the appropriate gear, just as a driver would do with a manual transmission before negotiating a corner. Even in the automatic mode, the driver can manually select the gear of his choice. The third mode is Manual, without any electronically governed intervention. There is no automatic downshift at low speed or an automatic up-shift when the engine reaches its redline, and the kick-down remains inoperative.
One reason the SLK55 rolls on 18-in. wheels is for brake clearance. In a car capable of reaching 124 mph in 17.5 seconds and weighing at least 3520 lb. with two up and some luggage, the SLK55 needs even larger and more sophisticated brakes than the SLK350. Its vented front discs of 13.4-in. diameter and 1.25-in. thickness follow race-car technology, floating on the aluminum centerpiece carried by the hub. They are checked by 6-piston aluminum calipers, while 13.0-in. vented rear discs with 4-piston calipers replace the smaller solid discs of the SLK350. Even the excellent rack-and-pinion power steering has been adapted to the more sporting character of the new model with a 7-percent-quicker ratio.
With such features as an electrically retractable hardtop, a clever "air scarf," and sophisticated air conditioning, the SLK55 AMG is not a sports car but a Grand Touring car, in the strictest sense of those words. But its compact dimensions, its agility, its power and speed and the confidence inspired by its remarkably rigid open-car structure certainly make it a great pleasure to drive on any sort of road.
