1989 Mercedes-Benz 190-Series Description
This 190E benz is one of the cleanest cars I've seen for it's age. Everything works, it smells good, it drives great, runs great, and looks great. All power windows work perfect, the power seats work perfect. The carpet is perfect, the headliner is perfect. The seat belts don't even show much wear.
I was very impressed with the handling of the car has and the quite smooth ride. The single wiper works perfect. It even has delay wiper function that works perfect. Washer fluid works too. The power antenna works when you turn on the radio it goes up just as it should. Heater controls work great.
The sunroof is the dual position type that both flips up in the back via one button and then slides all the way open via a second button. It also works perfectly and does not leak.
The car is rust free and it appears to be all original paint, no body work can be detected anywhere. There is some paint missing from the body just below the left tail light. Looks like a small hit that caused the paint to crack and fall off but it's not rusted. Looks like it still has the barrier coat in tact. The bumper just below that shows evidence of a small hit there as well. Has kind of a crease in it on the top. The bottom inside of the drivers door is beginning to get a little crusty but it's not through anywhere that I can tell and it can only be seen if you lay on the ground and look behind the weather strip.
The trunk is clean and still has the spare tire, original tool kit and the jack. You can also see the stereo wires laying there from where the head unit wires are back there for the amp and sub which have been removed. So it's basically pre-wired for a super easy install if you so desire that equipment.
The carpet is perfect. The interior is almost perfect, not one single tear anywhere in the seats or headliner. There are some scuffs on drivers door bottom that I believe can be cleaned off and the piller has a nick in covering but very minor. The dash pad is really nice and most of the dash parts are nice. They do show some wear but not much for a nearly 28 year old car. Speaking of that, this car is about to become a collectors item and will only gain value over the coming years. If you look much on ebay for parts you will see that people are parting these out like crazy right now. I ran the numbers and it looks like I would be better off to part it out. I came up with $3500 based on what others have the parts listed for if I parted out this entire car. I just hate to do that because it's such a nice ride.
The exhaust has a hole in it pre-muffler so it's got an exhaust note that it should not have. I did not fix it because it's all original and I don't want to take value away for those of you that want things bone stock OEM. If you want to trick the car out or restore it, that's up to you. I think it would make a great cosworth or wide body tribute car. I put the wheels on there because I thought they looked so nice. These are 18" with four brand new high speed directional tires mounted and balanced. I will also include the stock wheels with the car. They have good 15" tires on them with 3/4 tread life still remaining.
The car also has an alpine CD stereo head unit with 4 x 50 watt output and sub out. It looks like it was done by a pro but the amp and sub are now missing. All the wires were ran under the carpet and are not visible. Even the power wire is still hooked to the battery under the hood but the fuse has been removed. That power wire runs all the way back to the trunk along with the other wires from the head unit.
If you are leaning OEM, The paint could be revitalized by someone that is good with matching and a touch up brush. There are some dings but I believe the hail damage guys with the paintless dent removal tools could fix it right up. This car could really pop and be a real nice with original paint. Or go crazy and paint it and slam it down on the ground.
This car drives and performs flawlessly. It is very smooth over bumps with no rattles or clunks, hard to believe how good it rides. The transmission works perfectly and shifts crisply and at the appropriate times just as it should. The brakes work very well. The ABS light comes on sometimes and then goes back off. I hit a patch of wet leaves in my neighborhood while driving it and the ABS kicked in and I felt it pulse. So I know they are working but the light does come on for periods so it may have a sensor going out on one of the wheels.
Also I should mention that the cruise control works perfect and the passenger power mirror works perfect too. But I did notice recently that the knob is missing to adjust the drivers side mirror.
FYI, there is no tire rub with this current tire rim combo. You can make full radius turns, go over dips, rail roads, etc. with no rub.
Also the spare is a full size aluminum wheel that matches the other four originals that come with the car. Also discovered the original first aid kit in the car in the small compartment up in the rear window deck ledge. It appears to be un-used and everything seems to be in there. I honestly don't think it's ever been opened before.
I attempted to verify that the AC is functioning. So I located the AC compressor and noted that the clutch was not engaged. I turned on the AC and the clutch did not engage. So I located the charge port and removed the cap and checked for pressure. There was some pressure in the system which is a really good sign. However due to my past experience with AC system I could tell it wasn't enough pressure required to allow the compressor to run. I checked the tag and it requires R12, which I don't have. I only have the 134a. So I believe the AC will function when recharged with R12. Or you can completely evacuate the system of the remaining R12, pull a vacuum for about an hour and recharge it with 134a. Or at least I have done this on other similar older vehicles with great success. You should still consult a mercedes expert to be sure though before attempting that procedure.
The previous buyer backed out because he was unable to get the funds. I wasn't too terribly upset in this case because I felt that the car sold way to low. So please don't bid unless you really want the car and can pay for it.
I do reserve the right to end it at any time because the car is also for sale locally. Happy bidding!
