1929 Classic Motor Carriages Gazelle SSK Replica (1985)
1929 Mercedes-Benz CMC SSK Replica Description
I know very little about this vehicle. It was purchased from an estate sale and the following week I found out I was being laid off. Let me start with what I do know.
It was owned by a gentleman that used it as a parade vehicle and took it to classic car shows. I don't know if it was factory built or put together by this same gentleman, but it is in really great condition aside from a few simple things I'll get to in a moment.
The drivetrain and suspension are from a Chevy Chevette. It has the 1.6L 4-cylinder motor in it and an automatic transmission. It includes the top cover, has seat belts, and even appears to have had heat at one time, though the heater core has been bypassed, I don't know why.
I checked out underneath and found no rust other than the expected surface rust on parts. It was obviously garage kept and only saw nice bright sunny days.
It is in incredibly good condition given the year and mileage. It runs and drives, very well actually. Shifts smooth. However, I noticed some white smoke coming from the exhaust when I drove it home, and it got worse when I took it for a 2nd drive so I haven't driven it since. I believeit has a bad head gasket. It's a relatively simple fix (in comparison to today's motors) and I have the Chiltons manual for the Chevette that has details on how to do it. The entire engine gasket set appears to be about $50. I also found an entire running engine for $200 locally that I can give you the contact info for if you'd rather go that route.
Other issues I've noticed include:The voltage gauge andtachometerdo not work. All the other gauges appear to, including the gas gauge. There is a small dent in one of the rear metal "bumpers".One of the horn decorative trumpets is cracked.
I've submitted for the title from the IL DMV. If I receive it before the new owner takes possession I'll obviously sign it over at pickup, otherwise I'll give you a signed bill of sale and send you the title as soon as I receive it. It is titled as a 1985 Gazelle Street Rod and is clean and clear.
This is a really cool car and I'm sure whomever buys it will be impressed with the condition of the body and components.
