1992 Mercedes 300SL, 70,000 miles, Excellent Condition! No Reserve!
1992 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Description
1992 Mercedes 300SL, beautiful car!
This is the one people are looking for, highly sought after color combination!
Hard to find in this condition, this color combination and low miles!
This is a true 70,000 mile pampered car, on a scale of 1-10 the paint on this 300SL is a solid 9.5 (it could use a good wax to make it a 10)
The interior is nearly perfect as well, there is a small wear mark on the drivers side seat bolster but other than that the interior is extremely clean and free from stains, rips or tears.
The power seats work. The only thing that does not work is the tilt mechanism for the passenger side seat to access the rear, the drivers side seat will tilt forward to access the rear so I didn't see much point in repairing the passenger side as there are very few times you need to tilt the passenger side seat (no back seat)
Carpets are very clean, new floor mats were just installed.
Door panels are also close to perfect, no tears or stains.
The engine bay is also very clean, no drips or leaks and best of all not a spot of rust!
A/C was recently serviced and it blows cold!
The cloth top is in excellent condition, appears almost new, the hardtop is great, paint, like the rest of the car is nearly perfect but the headliner is coming off along the front edge and will need to be replaced.
If you are in the market for a 300SL make sure you ask the seller if the hydraulics for the convertible top have been replaced or rebuilt, below is from Top Hydraulics, one of the leading top restoration sources in the country.
"Model years 1990-1996 have 12 hydraulic cylinders, while 1997-2002 models have eleven hydraulic cylinders that move and lock the roadster soft top. (The left tonneau cover lock was omitted after 1996.) The original seals in the hydraulic cylinders, aka rams or actuators, will eventually fail in every R129"
As stated above, if the hydraulics have not been replaced they will fail resulting in a $7,000 repair!
As for this car, all 12 hydraulic cylinders have been replaced, the top goes up and down just as it did the day it left the factory, just as you want when driving a car of this quality.
Another common problem of the R129 Mercedes is what is called the "Dash Flash" in which due to age all of the warning lights on the dash randomly flash on and off causing a $350 rebuild of the instrument cluster, again, this is going to happen on most 300SL's and has been repaired on this car, another thing you don't have to worry about!
With that said there are a couple minor things on this car, a few clips and plastic pieces that need attention but nothing that sticks out or keeps anything from functioning properly, it is after all a 23 year old car, all in all it needs very little to make this car perfect!
This 300SL belongs to a friend of mine, I enjoy playing with old cars so he put it in my hands a few years ago when he quit driving it and wanted to get it ready to sell.
At the time the top cylinders needed to be rebuilt, the dash was acting up and a few other small common issues.
All of the work was completed a couple years ago but I decided to sit on the car in hopes the market for these would move up.
The R129's are the last of the hand built "over engineered" Mercedes and considered by many to be one of the best cars ever made.
Ideally I should hold on to this car for a couple more years because I really feel this car is on the verge of making a move up just as the previous models have done but I need the space for other projects so it is time for this to move on and let someone else enjoy the car and hopefully make the gains.
This is what I would consider to be a "collector grade" car and well worth taking the chance on, worst case it maintains it's value and you can enjoy driving this car for several years without losing a thing!
