1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 4.5 Sedan Sun Roof
1972 Mercedes-Benz 200-Series 280se Description
Up for auction is a 1972 Benz 280SE 4.5 with a column shift 3 speed automatic. They put the 4.5 in the 280SE for three years, producing13,527 units. This 4.5 engine is very reliable, desirable and capable of pushing the car to 126 MPH stock. It will perform even better with a few tweaks.
This 280SE sun roof car was bought by my father, for my mother, on mothers day in 2003. He got it from a friend that had it in his garage next to a Diesel Benz. His friend had owned it for about ten years prior to my Father. Before that, it came from Arizona where it had been repainted and the Transmission rebuilt at 42,000 miles.Within a year of of it being in my family, the Benz had the following maintenance done: Brake rebuild that included calipers and pads all around; Electronic ignition; A/C system rebuilt; Undercoating reapplied because the original was drying and wanting to peel; most of the front end steering components rebuilt or replaced; shocks;I have records from the past of typical maintenance, transmission rebuild, and a rear differential reseal. With is being from the 70's, there are a few cosmetic issues. I added pictures of what all I could. The paint has some cracking on the rear drivers quarter and on the passengers front door. The sunroof has a few chips around the opening and there are a couple small rock chips. The passengers front fender has a scratch along the bottom of it.The dash has a hairline crack, along with part of the dash wood. The headliner above the rear window has been like it is in the picture since the car came into my family. The trunk and the rear drivers side floor are missing the carpeting. There are a couple stains on the front carpet. The passengers side window will not go up all the way, it stays down about an inch. It sounds like the arm gear slips. The sunroof works but the motor likes a helping hand. The AM/FM radio turns on but you cannot hear anything. The Benz is driven every year, but only when all the salt-packed snow banks are gone and there has been a couple heavy rains. It drives a little less than 500 mile every year. Since it is cautiously driven, the body is very, very clean. The pictures that show the under coating and rockers have some dirt from my drive way, there is no rust on the underside.I ran it the other day when it was about 40F outside. It is stored in the cold side of my garage. It started immediately and ran great.I love driving this this car, I would not hesitate to drive it across the country. It does not burn or leak oil. Steering is tight. Brakes are spot on. All the lights work. Heat and A/C. Tires are older but in good shape. The transmission shifts like new. The seats are comfortable with no tears. If you are considering purchasing this car, please contact me and I will answer any questions you may have.
